Trigger point therapy – the practice of informed touch - manual for practitioners

"This book is a field manual for any health professional dealing with myofascial syndromes", from the introduction. "It's aim is to simplify and order the vast amounts of information related to the evaluation and treatment of myofascial pain." "We have endeavored to address the concerns and desires of healthcare providers for a manual that can assist in evaluating a patient, defining the presenting condition, and guiding treatment of that condition." "It is assumed that the reader has some knowledge of myology, therefore no effort is made to replicate the extensive background and theoretical discussion found in other seminal works on myofascial pain . . ."

I find this book to be very complete, with extensive diagrams and many with in-color highlights, which I believe are excellent, but it is more for the professional than an amateur learning the field or in trying to understand what their physical therapist may be doing to them - which was my case when I bought the book. I hope I am not being unfair by giving the book 4 stars instead of five, but the reason for my four-star rating simply is that this was a little over my head and did not meet my personal needs as well as the other book I also purchased, "The trigger point therapy workbook", by Claire Davis.

For those individuals in the intended audience, this book appears to be an excellent choice and very complete with diagrams and with an extensive set of exercises for stretching and manipulating all of the major muscle groups of the body. It is for the stretching exercise, which are excellent, that I am keeping the book and I would recommend it highly for anyone looking for such exercises. For the exercises alone I would give it five stars.

Excellent Tool for Therapists.

Have a patient with a troublesome pain issue? One that you just can't put your finger on? Well the education in Trigger Point Therapy is the book for you! I purchased the paperback version with the certification test and it is the clearest presentation of the trigger point pain issue I have ever used. I purchased the kindle version so I would have it with me, in case I needed the info at my fingertips during a session or wanted to show patients the pain area diagrams[home health or traveling situations]. The book not only increased my skills, but increased my credibility with patients and clients as I can show them what the issues are, work on them and assign their case specific homework [stretches & exercises]. I recommend it to massage therapists, physical therapists [and their assistants], occupational therapists [and their assistants]. There is an easy to follow self help version that the layman can get and use for themselves.

My family LOVES this book. We bought a copy as a Christmas present for our son and daughter since they love the movies and tv show. My husband and I read chapters to them each night and we love it too. Sounds just like the characters and it makes us all laugh out loud. The kids actually fought over who got to fill out all of the fun activities so we wound up buying a second copy for our daughter which wasn't a problem for us since the book is educational and entertaining. Highly recommend!

Great for kids and fans!

I know this is a children's book... but I got it because I'm a huge Dragons fan and wanted to add it to my collection! This book is a very cute, quick read. Kids and fans alike will love it! The replica of Hiccup's map is quite small but highly detailed and a cool collectors item. The blurbs from different characters are very IN character and fun to read, and we get some interesting insight on them. There's fun activities for kids so I'm sure if you have them they'll be drawing and filling things out! I definitely recommend it for any vikings, tiny of big!

King of Hollywoodland.

The following review of The Last Tycoon refers to the 1969 hardcover edition, published by Scribner's and edited by Edmund Wilson.

The Last Tycoon by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a work of fiction but its protagonist, the enigmatic Monroe Stahr bears more than a passing resemblance to real life Hollywood icon Irving Thalberg. Thalberg was an enormously influential producer who took Hollywood by storm only to die at the tender age of 37. Quite ironically, F. Scott Fitzgerald died suddenly at the age of 44 while writing The Last Tycoon. One can only speculate as to how powerful this novel might have been had Fitzgerald lived long enough to complete and further refine the already wonderfully compelling narrative.
We know from the very interesting notes written by the author and presented as a supplement to the text of this unfinished novel that Fitzgerald did not approach the creation of The Last Tycoon lightly. This was a labor undertaken with meticulous attention to plot and character development. Specific scenes were crafted to create just the right mood or get across to the reader just the right message. One would be hard pressed to name another book about the rough and tumble world of Hollywood that contains the degree of nuance found in The Last Tycoon.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this work is the empathy Fitzgerald shows toward his fictional creation, the larger than life producer Monroe Stahr. As a noted author who found himself laboring over movie scripts in an era when such work was considered demeaning for real artists, one would have expected Fitzgerald to display a more cynical, less complimentary view of the movie production overlords of the 1930s....most of whom were semiliterate at best. On the contrary, Stahr is presented as a complex, supremely capable and kind individual who, though lacking in formal education, knows his business inside and out.
The Last Tycoon is first and foremost about Monroe Stahr but the narration is provided by Cecelia Brady, a young woman who admires Stahr and is not so secretly in love with him. In the very first chapter, Fitzgerald has Cecelia say the following: "It's more than possible that some of the pictures Stahr himself conceived had shaped me into what I was." After reading that line, I had to wonder if Cecelia was speaking for just herself and Stahr or for all of us and Hollywood in general.
Though unfinished, The Last Tycoon is an important, thought provoking book. Highly recommended.

Gorgeous Coralie-Bickford Smith cover art!

I purchased all six of these books from the Canadian Amazon website (amazon.ca) several weeks ago because I couldn't bear to wait any longer for them to show up on the American site.

The covers are just gorgeous. The art is metallic and beautiful and the covers have a soft feel to them. The inside flap of the cover is perforated and is designed to be removed and used as a matching bookmark.

The cover art for this set of F. Scott Fitzgerald books was designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith - the genius behind the similarly beautiful Penguin cloth-bound classics series. Not only is the literature itself classic, but the books look like a classic collector's item as well! Friends compliment me on them all the time when they see them on my bookcase!

F. Scott Fitzgerald At The Movies-Almost

I suppose that it is just a matter of taste, or maybe just being a cranky literary guy of sorts, but publishing a well-known author’s last unfinished work, as here with F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Last Tycoon seems rather sacrilegious or perhaps just publisher’s greed to play off one last time on an author’s fame. I have no problem with, say, a publisher publishing a posthumous book like one did in 1964 with Ernest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast since that book had been completed and moreover provided a great snapshot into the self-imposed American literary exile community, including some interesting insights into Fitzgerald as well, of post-World War I Paris.

The subject here, the partially told saga of the last of the self-made maverick movie producers, is hardly definitive, or as compellingly told about the corporatization of that profit-filled medium. Moreover the pieces here add nothing to Fitzgerald’s reputation which will always hinge on the novel, The Great Gatsby, maybe Tender Is The Night, and a slew of his prolifically produced short stories.
That said, that off my chest I will say that Fitzgerald who did do work as a screenwriter, although it is not clear how successfully, has a pretty good idea of what was going on in Hollywood once the “talkies” came in and forced the story line and dialogue of a film to ratchet up several notches. And then there is the question of putting what looks like a good idea on the screen with many times temperamental actors and inadequate financial backing. In any case the movie producer here, Monroe Stahr, is foredoomed to be the last of the independent filmmakers not only by the new system coming in place but by the fact that despite his “boy wonder” status for producing mostly hits and getting the most out of his employees come hell or high water he is headed for an early grave due to rough living and a weak heart.

The story, his story as far as it goes, is told by the daughter of one of his associates who is young enough, a college student at Bennington, to be seriously in love with him although he is only, at best, tepid toward her. The reason, or rather the big reason Monroe was still in thrall to the memory of his late actress wife, and, was smitten by a woman he met randomly on his studio lot who preternaturally looked like his late wife. That short tremulous love affair which ended in sorrow and departure is the human interest center of the story. Additionally there are scenes like how screenwriters write individually and collectively (or don’t write under either category), the importance of skilled cameramen in getting just the right effect that the director or producer whoever is hanging over him or her, how stars are made (or unmade), which gives an insight into the collective nature of the film industry no matter who produces, who directs, and who stars. That theme was done very well cinematically in the 1950s film, The Bad and the Beautiful about a post-World War II Monroe Stahr –like figure and the director, the rags to riches actress and the screenwriter he put the screws to in order to produce what he thought were great films.

There are also some interesting scenes, and some references sprinkled throughout The Last Tycoon, about the coming unionization of the industry, the fears that thought produced in the movie moguls, including Stahr, and a decidedly more morbid fear about the “reds” bringing revolution to their Hollywood front door which, perhaps, foreshadowed the post-war red scare Hollywood Ten blacklist night. Nice pieces, nice insights but as a whole the thing does not hang together since the driven Fitzgerald have not worked out all the kinks. Enough said.

About the Author

James Stevens Curl is a leading architectural historian. His many books include Funerary Monuments & Memorials in St Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh (2013); Freemasonry & the Enlightenment: Architecture, Symbols, & Influences (2011-an earlier version of which won (1992) the Sir Banister Fletcher Award as Best Book of the Year); Spas, Wells, & Pleasure-Gardens of London (2010); Victorian Architecture: Diversity & Invention (2007); and The Honourable The Irish Society and the Plantation of Ulster, 1608-2000 (2000). He contributed to, and edited, the scholarly monograph Kensal Green Cemetery: The Origins and Development of the General Cemetery of All Souls, Kensal Green, London, 1824-2001 (2001), the first major study of any nineteenth-century cemetery in the world. He is a Member of the Royal Irish Academy, was twice Visiting Fellow at Peterhouse, University of Cambridge, and is currently Professor of Architecture at the University of Ulster.

Susan Wilson is an historian with an especial interest in garden architecture, landscape aesthetics, and places of commemoration. Her doctorate was conferred (2010) by the University of Bristol for her study of the 'Swiss Garden Cottage: the origins of the chalet-style in British architecture'. She published her early findings in Exercises in Translation: Swiss-British Cultural Exchange (2006). In 2013 she chaired an interdisciplinary conference-session on the Rustic Tradition in Garden Art in New York. She taught the history of the applied and decorative arts at Chelsea College of Art and Design (2000-6), and gained recognition for her teaching practice as a Fellow of The Higher Education Academy (2007). She has collaborated with Professor Stevens Curl on this edition of the Dictionary since 2012. Awarded (2012) the Opler Grant for Emerging Scholars by the Society of Architectural Historians (USA), she is also an Academic Member of the Landscape Institute.

The Definitive Source

A dictionary with personality is a rare thing today, when bland collaborative work is usually the only way to deal with the deluge of information. With this third edition, Professor Curl keeps his one-man show on the road in triumphal style. The major additions since the second edition of 2006 are nearly 500 articles on landscape architecture by Dr. Susan Wilson (now acknowledged as co-author) and the restoration of the Bibliography from the first edition, expanded to over 3000 entries. The result is a book at the comfortable limit of the readable (as opposed to the merely consultable), with Curl’s familiar clarity of description, exquisite line and stipple drawings, and defense of architecture as a sacred trust for the humans who are obliged to inhabit it.
Like any good Dictionary, this one draws the reader into random and potentially endless wandering. For instance, I was intrigued by mention on the front flap of a ‘battle garden’, and discovered that one Irish example was made as “a talisman to keep the Turks at bay: it succeeded.” A reference there to ‘horn-work’ educated me on the difference between cat’s ear, lion’s ear, dog’s ear, and ass’s ear horns. A glimpse of nearby Victor Horta had me flipping back to Art Nouveau and Art Deco, with a radiant drawing of the Hoover Factory entrance; to Artisan Mannerism (“which some commentators have found refreshing and others distressing”) and so on to Mannerism, by way of a long detour on Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
Professor Curl’s once unfashionable, anti-Modernist stance is now almost mainstream, as many would agree with his devastating understatement on Walter Gropius: “the environments created as a result of his influence have not proved to be either agreeable or functional.” While this edition excludes entries on living architects, Frank Gehry, Daniel Libeskind and their kind get their come-uppance under ‘Deconstructivism or Deconstructionism’. However, such judgments are embedded in information as copious and impartial as one could wish. There are also new friends, for instance in the much-expanded article on ‘New Classicism’. My only regret is that there are no entries on buildings (except the Pantheon). Should I want to know who were the architects of the Empire State Building or Schloss Neuschwanstein, I would have to look on the Internet, which threatens to make all paper reference works redundant. This Dictionary more than justifies its medium, for beside the obvious advantage that one can trust all its facts, dates, and sources, it has the feeling of a real communication from mind to mind.

About the Author
John Lewis, Ed.D. has a doctoral degree from the University of Southern California in educational psychology, with a dissertation focus on mental models and problem-solving. Combined with over 25 years of experience in knowledge management and performance improvement, the author addresses the core issues facing today’s organizations. He coined the phrase “what gets modeled gets measured” to accompany the popular phrase “what gets measured gets done,” to place our focus on the “model level” of our successes and failures.
