That was the original intention of this monograph: but during execution it became clear that the existing theory of outliers was deficient in several areas, and so the monograph also contains a number of new results and conjectures. In view of the enormous volume ofliterature on the outlier problem and its cousins, no attempt has been made to make the coverage exhaustive. The material is concerned almost entirely with the use of outlier tests that are known (or may reasonably be expected) to be optimal in some way. Such topics as robust estimation are largely ignored, being covered more adequately in other sources. The numerous ad hoc statistics proposed in the early work on the grounds of intuitive appeal or computational simplicity also are not discussed in any detail.

About the Author
Karin C. Ryding is Sultan Qaboos bin Said Professor Emerita of Arabic linguistics at Georgetown University. She was dean of Interdisciplinary Programs at Georgetown for three years, and headed Arabic training at the State Department's Foreign Service Institute from 1980 to 1986. She was president of the American Association of Teachers of Arabic (AATA), and has served on the executive committee of the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages (ADFL) as well as on the executive council of the Modern Language Association (MLA). In 2008, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from AATA as well as the Distinguished Service Award from the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics of Georgetown University.

No colour figures/photos/plates in my copy!

I have been looking for a good remote sensing text related to geology for a while. I thought this brand new printing would be exactly what I was after, lots of detail and thorough explanations with pictures and diagrams, and obviously updated since the first edition of 1991.

Unfortunately, I am sending this back after only an hour of it being in my hands as the section of colour plates that the text refers to is entirely in black and white/grey-scale, and other figures/photos/plates within the text with titles that descibe areas of interest in terms of colour shades and changes are also in black and white/grey-scale.

It is extremely frustrating to see something like a diagram of 'The concept of the Munsell clour circuit or wheel.' or an image of a copper porphyry with alteration zones described in colour appearance and find yourself looking at a grey-scale image. The frustration is that I can see that had the figures/photos/plates been in colour as described they would have been extremely useful and I would now be writing a rave review, it's such a pity !

The lack of colour sadly makes the book of little use as a reference or learning aid and certainly not worth the price in my opinion (US$239.00) although others might disagree. I hope the problem is my copy was a misprint or second but I suspect it wasn't.

The search for a decent text continues (unless this was just a misprint or second of course)....................

About the Author
Lian Gouw was born in Jakarta, Indonesia when Indonesia was still a Dutch colony known as the Netherlands East Indies. Her family, upper middleclass Chinese, raised her with a Dutch education and cultural values. Lian grew up during the tremulous years of World War II, followed by the post-war period and Indonesian Revolution. Put under the strain of the new Indonesian government, she immigrated to the USA in 1966. Lian s short stories and poems have appeared in Quietus Magazine, Writing for our Lives, Voices and Visions, The Highland s Low Down and Reflections. Her Predicament, an earlier version of the first chapter of her novel, Only A Girl, was included in the 2006 anthology of the SF Writers Conference, Building Bridges from Writers to Readers. In her writing, Lian explores themes of human relationships, connection with animals, and fable-like fantasy. She is particularly interested in the lives and struggles of women.

Great family saga

Hated to see this book end.
