A very good book

Aagard and Lund do a greatv job in teaching the Tarrasch defense.
This book features a good selection of games, as well, as good highlighting of typical strategic and tactical themes.
Anyone from C player to Master will benefit (I am a master).
Most important, you can really feel that the authors have played the defense, and they have personal opinion on the line (this should be the rule, but lately, many MI/GMs tend to write books also on opening they have little ideas of how to handle, and the resut is something close to a database dump with little useful pointers).
A good idea would be to purchase together Schiller's "A complete defense to d4", one of the best Schiller's books (since he doews play the Tarrasch as Black).

A good Repertoire book

A very active, easy to learn system agaisnt 1.d4 backed up with good theory and advice. Also, they go into very good systems against white's other first moves, except for 1. e4. I've noticed that most 1.d4 players don't bother with main line queens gambits but opt for simple systems like the "Old Man's Bad Habit", Hodgsone tromp, colle, etc. This books deals with all of those and a great section on the Reti. A good repertoire book.

Fermi's paradox (again).

The American military discovers a sphere on the Pacific Ocean seafloor which transports humans thousands of light years to other star systems. It's tried twice by astronauts, one of whom lands on an airless asteroid and survives and the other dies instantly and terribly on a neutron star. So the American President orders 10 condemned prisoners to be offered a pardon if they 'volunteer' for and survive ten missions each using the sphere.

It's a good read. Well put together. Perhaps not quite as good as the author's second book 'Paradox'. About the right length, and with a slightly surprising ending.

About the Author
Sang H. Kim is an internationally respected author of 20 martial arts books, including the widely acclaimed Vital Point Strikes and the classics Ultimate Flexibility, Ultimate Fitness through Martial Arts, Martial Arts After 40, Combat Strategy and Teaching Martial Arts. His new book Mindful Movement: Mastering Your Hidden Energy is available at Amazon.com. 

He has also created over 200 instructional video programs including Self-defense Encyclopedia, Knife-defense, Power Breathing, Junsado Training Series, and Complete Taekwondo Series. They are available through Amazon Instant Video.

He won the 1976 Korean National Championship and was named Instructor of the Year by the Korean government in 1983. As a special agent during his military service, he developed tactical combat methods for hand-to-hand and hand-to-weapon combat for covert operatives.

Sang H. Kim is the originator of MBX-12, mindful movement and deep breathing exercises, and found it clinically effective in managing stress. His research results were published in the July 2013 issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, and featured in CBS News, Huffington Post, Fox News, and others. 
Dr. Kim has a PhD in Exercise Science, and had training as a Postdoctoral research fellow at the National Institutes of Health. He also had additional training at the National Cancer Institute and the Institute of Lifestyle Medicine of Harvard Medical School.

I love this book it is so helpful as a Taekwondo teacher to use as a reference for drills and techniques. Sang Kim goes into detail of the ritual of step sparring and theories behind it with techniques mentioned.
