The first, Argenteuil, has come to represent the artistic flowering and official establishment of Impressionism as a movement, with Monet as its creative leader. But it was also Monet who, in his endeavour to capture the ever-changing face of reality, went beyond Impressionism and thereby beyond the confines of the self-contained panel painting. This step he took in the village of Giverny: here he painted the Poplars, Grain Stacks and Rouen Cathedral series in which he addressed one motif in constantly new variations. Here, too, Monet laid out the famous garden with its water lily pond which he was to paint on huge canvases well into the 1920s. He thereby sought to render not reality as objectively experienced, but rather that which takes place 'between the motif and the artist'. In their open, nolonger more than tenuously representational structure and impressive scale, his water lily paintings - created long before the currents of the contemporary avant-garde-point the way forward to the developments of the future.

There are better books on Monet

Fully illustrated, but the reproductions are dark and to the brown/orangey side. The text is adequate, but nothing new to anyone who knows Monet. To someone new to the subject it gives an overview of Monet's life and work.

I recommend the following books for a more in depth study of his work and more accurate color in the illustrations:

"Monet, Nature into Art", John House.

"Claude Monet 1840 - 1926", Charles F. Stuckey (Catalog for Art Institute of Chicago Retrospective).

"Monet in the 90's, the Series Painting", Paul Hayes Tucker.

The book presents a nice sample of the artist's work

I agree with the previous reviewer who notes the darkness of the color in the reproductions as a negative. However, that is why I gave 4 - instead of 5 stars. There has never been a Monet reproduction that does the original justice. The book presents a nice sample of the artist's work. However, I do wish there were more pieces from Monet's stay in Holland, particularly, his paintings from Amsterdam.
The text is a light, quick, and informative read, and is well served by the large hardcover format. It gives a quick and accurate overview of the artist's life.

Open . . . Wounds

If you've read some of my posts, you know one of my complaints about Christian fiction is that so often we get more of the same without much variety or imagination. This occurs primarily in the romance and romantic suspense genres, but predictability can show up anywhere. That's why it's so utterly enjoyable to review a novel which is written incredibly well with a fascinating plot that allows for immense satisfaction even if or when the dots can be connected early.

Alton Gansky's latest release aptly titled Wounds and published by B&H Publishing Group is an exceptional crime novel with well-defined characters, two of which are uniquely connected by a single tragedy which has severely altered their lives for nearly 30 years even though they aren't introduced until a murder unites them. Their still open wounds have been festering and healing seems incongruous but an absolute need.

Detective Carmen Rainmondi lost her sister to what she's convinced was a murder many years ago. She's never given up on finding out who took her sister's life although officially attributed to a car wreck. It's a cold case that simmers in her psyche and never cools off. She's walled up her heart to control the emotional breakage caused by the unresolved loss of her younger sister.

Dr. Ellis Poe is shocked and saddened to learn that a student at the seminary where he teaches has been murdered but equally shocking is the deliverer of this news. Recognizing the female detective from a distant past that haunts his everyday existence with guilt and remorse, Dr. Poe must find a way to reveal his secret to Detective Rainmondi and suffer the inevitable consequences.

A series of grotesque murders begins in the San Diego community while detectives attempt to figure out if, how, and why they're connected. A purposeful Dr. Poe visits the police department to see Detective Rainmondi and is literally sickened by the murder board pictures in the room where she agrees to talk with him. Distracted by the heinous photographs, the professor is able to see the one thing that ties the murders together and insinuates there are more to come.

Carmen is an intentionally lonely soul with a hard edge. Dr. Poe chooses his loneliness as a deserved punishment and allows depression to rule his soul. His faith is strong, but his practice of it is shallow and plagued with guilt. In different ways both are pitiable. Their connection proves to be intense and climactic.

The only enhancement to the story, for me, would've been some bona fide spiritual warfare at the end, but it would've been out of character for Dr. Poe's faith so the conclusion works perfectly.

Alton Gansky is a veteran writer of exciting and innovative adventure and mystery novels, and this story joins the mix with outstanding prose which gives his characters a clever combination of wit, sorrow, and tenacity. An interesting story with plenty of tension, Wounds gives lovers of crime novels a genuine treat to read. I loved this book.

gritty, but an awesome read

I have read several of Alton Gansky's books, but this one has to be his best ever. It had a teriffic plot. Even when it became obvious where the plot was going, it only became more suspenseful. I liked the characters, epecially the two main ones who though so totally different in every way, were connected by their past.

This is a gritty novel. If you're wanting to read a cozy little mystery, this book is not for you. In fact, other than the killings, which I won't give spoilers away, and one of the characters, there isn't much Christian about the book. There is still a Christian world view, and the book is clean from bad language. There is a lot of violence, but it isn't overdone or too graphic, in my opinion. Good does triumph over evil in the end, and though the issue of forgiveness on someone's part was left up in the air, I enjoyed the ending of the book as much as the rest of it. I had been looking forward to reading this book, and I was not disappointed. Gansky outdid himself on this book, and I would put this book up against any of the secular best seller books in the thriller/suspense genre'. It is awesome.

Beyond Brilliant!

Wounds is a book that will WOW you! I was so addicted to this book I plowed through all 379 pages in a day. It's one of those books I kept reading faster and faster because I was dying to know how it ended and then I was totally depressed as soon as it was over!

Gansky is a genius storyteller and he paced this book with the precision and skill of a master. I never got bored because he dropped clues at just the right time to keep me intrigued. I loved the plot and how he connected all of the characters together in the most unexpected of ways.

The characters he created are complicated with so much more to them than initially shown. Detective Carmen Rainmondi has a case on her hands that can make or break her career. All murders are personal to her after the brutal slaying of her sister but this one becomes quite personal. A strange witness, Dr. Ellis Poe who is a college professor linked to the first murder seems to be hiding something but she can't figure out what it is.

I was really interested in the religious historical aspect of the story. Gansky has a genius mind to take these events from history and create such a twisted, complex plot. The Biblical parallels were incredibly detailed and well thought out. I couldn't wait to see what would come next.
This book had the most perfect ending. He tied it up exactly as it should be and the last line of the book was perfection. Of course I'm not going to give it away - you have to read for yourself. But I loved that it was realistic and he didn't make some unrealistic happy ending complete with a pink bow.

Wounds is the best book I've read in ages and I'd give it more than five stars if I could!

Kausthub Desikachar has a PhD in philosophy from Madras University. He teaches yoga internationally, is an accomplished photographer, and is involved in social causes. He is the cofounder and CEO of Krishnamacharya Healing and Yoga Foundation.

Warm and heartfelt - rich and informative

Kausthub Desikachar, grandson of Krishnamacharya, mixes biography, personal recollections of learning from his father and grandfather, with personal experiences with his own students and clients. We learn about Krishnamacharya's remarkable life, filled with commitment to follow his path despite many obstacles, including hitting the road when he was in his sixties to support his family when patronage for his school was lost. What comes across most is Kausthub's frequent reminders that his grandfather always practiced viniyoga -- adapting the yoga practices to each individual including always being respectful of each persons religious and spiritual beliefs and encouraging them to find their own truth in their own traditions if they have one. A sincere and welcome book. There is surprisingly little overlap with other books about Krishnamacharya, as Kausthub writes sincerely and from the heart. I have heard Kausthub speak, and his speaking voice comes through in his writing. A rich experience with a lot to reconsider about the development of asana practice in the early part of last century, and a lot to ponder about yoga and life.

Incredible book. This is a MUST-HAVE book for every single Yoga Teacher and Yoga Student. Really awesome!!

Yoga is born

A great book to give the "un-yogi" background on where yoga was born. Gives a wonderful perspective on what yoga used to be like before modern gyms took over the world and exercise became a cookie-cutter sport like most everything else in America. I can't imagine the depth of knowledge this man's students took away from him about their bodies, their health, and their mental well-being. A glimpse at what Yoga still is in some studios here today as well!

Esack's book is an excellent introduction for those who are beginners in Quranic studies as well as a great refresher for those more involved with Quranic studies. Esack is able to cover the main themes of the Quran as well as the historical and contemporary discussions relating to the Quran. It is also very well researched from an academic point of view as it uses both contemporary and traditional sources for Quranic commentary. Finally, this book is a great starting point for understanding the Quran.
