How do ya wanna play?

This book isn't for a person who can pick out a tune by ear, and is happy with that. This book is for the person trying to teach themselves banjo, and isn't happy with just picking out what they hear without any rhyme or reason. This book gives you not only the how of picking, but also the why and the when of different styles. It will be a lot easier going through this book with an instructor who teaches musical elements in regards to the banjo, but quite doable on you own.

Lots of information in a skinny book

This is a good book for intermediate level players looking to expand there ability to play in all keys. The author gives you diagrams on how chord forms (major, minor, 6th, 7th etc) relate to a given position as well as how to find these chords across the fret board. It has some simple exercises related to each roadmap, but working through this book could take several years if you wanted to design your own exercises based on each chord formation in each key. It is a deceptively thin book for all the information held within. I would not recommend it to brand-new players because the lesson design is not really geared toward getting a new player to play arrangements. If you have played through Jack Hatfield's 1st book on 5 string banjo playing (go to his website), then the material presented in this book will make sense to you; and it is an excellent resource for learning the fretboard.

The Best Book on Shame

I went through a period of obsession with the concept of shame and read everything I could get my hands on. This is by far the best book on shame. It combines a solid theoretical basis with useful therapizing helps for dealing with shame.
After reading this book, I read two other books by Stephen Pattison and I've become a fan. Shame:... is by far the most human of his books; the others are a bit more dry and you don't get such a sense of the humanity of the author, but nonetheless are excellent books.

For those who want to understand what shame is, how it differs from guilt and other estranged aspects of the psychological self this is a great book. If you have a tendancy to feel uncomfortable when complimented, or given a gift, or praised then reading SHAME will help you understand why you feel that discomfort.

Ruth E. Kastner is a Research Associate and member of the Foundations of Physics group at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is the recipient of two National Science Foundation research awards for research in time symmetry issues and the transactional interpretation.

Eye-opening view into the quantum realm

It is easy to see the beauty of mathematical equations that model the reality around us. But accompanying that math, if you are really curious, an interpretation or visualization on why it works that way is required. With classical physics, interpretations are easier. Even general relativity can be grasped with analogies (e.g. the heavy marble on the rubber sheet representing gravity around a planet). But quantum physics has always defied a plausible interpretation for me. All the popular interpretations (e.g. collapsing wave functions or splitting universes because a scientist made a measurement) sounded so arbitrary and kooky to me. This book discusses a new and completely satisfying interpretation to quantum theory and provides answers to the "quantum riddles".

This book starts with an excellent introduction into what is so unusual about the quantum realm and why it has traditionally defied interpretations. Next Dr. Kastner introduces her Possibilist Transactional Interpretation (PTI) using figures and analogies (there is no math in this book). Accepting the interpretation is still very difficult partly because the mathematics it is explaining predict that bizarre things can and do happen in this world. The interpretation is used to help visualize and explain classic quantum puzzles such as Einstein's "spooky action at a distance" and single particles seemingly taking multiple paths at the same. As the layers are peeled back, Dr. Kastner applies the interpretation to other aspects of quantum theory, physics in general, and then on to some metaphysical concepts (e.g. how space and time are borne out around us and even free will!). The book is an easy and enjoyable read while providing an completely eye-opening view into the quantum realm and the "unseen reality".

Complex but Fantastic Book

This is a an excellent follow-up to Kastner's 2012 book. Whereas that volume explored the mathematics of her expansion of the Transactional Interpretation, this popular book explains in graspable terms what is going on at the quantum level in the issuance of offer and confirmation waves and the virtual particles that give rise to these quantum exchange processes. The process is shown to produce what we can experience through the sense world. I find that Kastner's interpretation of quantum theory can explain some of what we see in relativistic quantum theory very clearly (for example, offer waves and confirmation waves contain complex numbers and so the collapse we expect to see in quantum experiments is represented by the imaginary parts of each type of wave negating each other mathematically when multiplied). Her full interpretation makes us rethink the physical world by seeing it as a field of events, which comprise actions and potential actions that are available to arise. This picture of a multidimensional sea of possibilities as reality is very different from a uni-directional world that hums along more or less predictably and her book is revolutionary for presenting it.

Things Are Not Always What They Seem

Reality is much richer than we usually notice as we go about our mundane affairs. But as the author of this book demonstrates, "things are not always what they seem."

This book isn't just a refresher on quantum mechanics. It provides a new theoretical perspective called the Possibilist Transactional Interpretation, or PTI. (This was certainly new to me at least, and I think it will be to most readers.) Kastner uses images, metaphors and carefully-crafted stories to guide the reader on a splendidly executed tour of this approach, moving through the quantum reality to everyday reality. She shows how the "riddles" of the quantum world (such as wave/particle duality, nonlocality and more) can be unraveled and made sense of.

Especially intriguing is her description of a reality that extends beyond (or outside or beneath) the spacetime framework of which we’re aware, but yet is intimately involved in the operation of events in spacetime. This deeper aspect of reality works underneath our familiar three-dimensions-plus-time to create our everyday world.

Kastner has expertise in both physics and philosophy, and her clear writing, logical presentation and understandable explanations make the complex ideas in this book accessible for any intelligent reader. Highly recommended!
