About the Author
Dr. Larry Linkous is a third generation preacher whose more than forty years of public ministry experiences has sharpened his awareness and sensitivity to the challenges and needs of people in this demanding world. Larry spent his younger years out of Bible school in evangelism and youth ministry, but early on realized his true calling as pastor, a shepherd of God's sheep.

Dr. Linkous has been married for forty-four years to his wife Sandra and they pastor a great inter-denominational multicultural church on the Space Coast of Florida, a church they founded in 1983. In 1990 Larry began a daily two-and-a-half hour radio program Thee Morning Drive that continues to broadcast daily Monday thru Friday from 6:30 to 9:00 eastern time airing on many stations across the nation and streaming around the world at www.FindNew Life.com.

I am a fan of Pastor Linkous. I have enjoyed his preaching and encouraging radio show for years. I also enjoyed the book. It contains basic Christian concepts and presents them in a manner that is easy to understand and apply to one's life.

areas that individuals deal with day in and out, in today's society. I purchased it
to read on my ipad, and in a few sittings read the book!
We live in such a fast paced world, with technology and the many voices we
hear each day. The book will help anyone to truly reflect on those things
in life, that are important to finish strong in life.

Fantastic!

This book was easy to read, the steps were clear, and the directions short, sweet, and to the point. I purchased the first book yesterday (4/20/16) and I couldn't put it down. I immediately bought book 2. I am in process of finding the right puppy for me to begin our service work. This book was very helpful! I am very confident that I will be able to train my dog to exactly my needs! I emailed the author with a question and she responded within the hour with a clear answer and genuine interest to hear back from me once I obtain my pup and we begin training. I HIGHLY recommend.
I was NOT given this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion. I purchased this myself and it is fantastic for ANYONE looking to train their own dog.

There is no such thing as a disappointing Tamara Alexander book. They are all exceptional and memorable reads!

I'm not going to retell the plot of the story here like most reviews tend to do. I'm just going to tell you that if you love good and wholesome love stories that will make your heart swell and that you will never want to end, then read ANY Tamara Alexander novel. The Timber Ridge series is no exception! Love everything Tamara writes.

A Refreshing Change from the Typical Christian Historical Romance

Once again, I am reading a romance, only in this case, a historical one instead of a suspense one. I will volunteer to be the first to mock myself, in a light-hearted manner. I realize that some people with whom I am acquainted will smirk at the fact that I offered to receive and read this book for review. Okay now, are we done with the mocking, smirking, and eye-rolling? Good, let's go on to the review. ;)

In Tamera Alexander's book, *Within My Heart*, the plot begins in a traditional manner for the typical genre of historical romances. There is a young woman, in this case widowed, who is a genius, and much better-educated than most women of the time. She has a fiery temperament, and is willing to stand her line with *any* man. This is great for me, up to a point, because I really enjoy strong female characters. Not the "I am woman, hear me roar" silly feminist type, but a strong, realistic woman. The problem is that I also enjoy characters and settings that are at least *somewhat* historically accurate. The typical historical romance seems not to be accurate in this regard at all.

The other element that annoyed me was the ending. The typical "deep, dark" secret was in presence. Also, in the great culmination of the book, there is the typical "danger" to the characters. There are a limited number of dangers used (or, I should say, over-used) in historical romances that anyone who has read them, or read the jokes about them, would recognize. One of these is actually used near the end of the book. Finally, the author tries too hard to be stirring with her flowery rhetoric. The last paragraphs sounded like the end to an English epic from literature class in high school. The flowery language was a bit over-the-top, as it were.

Despite all of this, I truly did enjoy the book, and rate it quite highly. For one thing, despite the over-use of literary conventions typical to such novels, the author pretty much limited her use of these to the above-listed items. In fact, historically the somewhat "modern" temperament of the women out west was in evidence. They had no choice *but* to dispense with traditional cultural understandings of the sexes, and learn to hunt, shoot, chop wood, haul wood, farm, and so forth, just as well as any man. The historical records, including the diaries of frontier women, showed this remarkable independent streak. The problem is that most authors do not portray the situation in a realistic enough manner to show why these women were like they were. Tamera Alexander does do this. Granted, not all were the geniuses that these books portray, but that is forgivable given the broader pluses in the book.

The "deep, dark" secret seemed quite out of place, and not necessary to the plot. It really did seem as if Alexander only put it in there to make the book more like the other books in the genre. Other than this, the story was remarkably realistic. The main characters had a bad past, but these were well-known in the case of the heroine, Rachel Boyd, and hidden for a reason in the case of the hero, Dr. Rand Brookston. Rachel's husband was killed a few years prior to the book by a wild animal, and she is afraid to love again. Still no deep, dark secret. Brookston was injured and had a frightening experience of nearly being horribly misdiagnosed by the battle surgeon. Again, this was in his past, prior to the novel. During the time frame that it occurred in the Civil War, such happenings could occasionally happen.

The book seems to be divided into three roughly equal parts. These parts are not officially listed, indeed, there are no larger "sections" to the novel, beyond chapter headings. This is only my own observation.

In part one, the characters are introduced, and Brookston is clearly in love with Rachel, which she knows, but doesn't reciprocate. She has a negative view of medical doctors, for her own reasons. Brookston proves to her he is not like her misconception of doctors, so her feelings begin to thaw towards him. Part two is the story of how their friendship develops and she falls in love with him, and part three details how she gets over her fears and they become engaged.

The typical, tired story elements of the novel may have caused me to become so irritated that I ignored the enormous good in the book, but not quite. There was another saving grace to the novel, and that is how they portrayed Brookston's symptoms that today would be classified as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from the war. The realism, largely absent from much period fiction, was a breath of fresh air. Even though I did not have the same personal injury horrors in the same manner as Brookston did, I can empathize with his plight, as I have PTSD, and so it struck a chord with me.

Trust me, this book may have some faults, typical of such romances, but it is not the typical book of this genre. It has realism, believability, sheds most of the more annoying tropes, and is extremely well-written. The prose is easily readable (though a bit overly, purposefully, poetic at times), and the characters were ones I truly cared about. This book, despite its problems, was well worth the read. Recommended.

Great Read

The widow Rachel Boyd is struggling to raise her two sons and keep her ranch running in the Colorado Rockies. Dr. Rand Brookston comes into town with his new modern way of medicine. Rachel does not like doctors because her father was one.

Under troubling circumstances, Rachel must trust Dr. Brookston. The doctor is having trouble of his own; adjusting to his new life. The town people are having a hard time accepting him as the new doctor.

Rachel and Dr. Brookston must aside their difference and have faith in each other.

Within My Heart is a wonderful historical novel. The author uses incredible detail and descriptions of Colorado. There have been dozens of books and movies about a new doctor in town, but the formula works very well in this novel. You instantly feel for the main character, Rachel, as she struggles to keep her ranch and raise her children by herself. This is a great read.

About the Author
Randall Schaetzl is a Professor of Geography and Geosciences at Michigan State University. His research has been published in all the leading soils, geomorphology, and geography journals. He is the editor of the Soils section for the International Encyclopedia of Geography (Association of American Geographers) and a Fellow of the Geological Society of America. He is an expert in the soils and landforms of the Great Lakes region, and he is editor-in-chief of Michigan Geography and Geology (2012). His expertise on podzolization and pedoturbation has led him to publish numerous papers on these widespread soil processes.

Michael Thompson is a Professor of Soil Science at Iowa State University. For more than twenty years, he taught pedology and clay mineralogy courses, and for the past ten years he has taught courses in soil chemistry. Thompson's research has dealt with paleosols, soil organic matter, and the fate of actinides, heavy metals, and organic contaminants in waste-amended soils. His research seeks to identify the chemical and physical conditions that favor stability, transformations, and movement of soil organic matter, anthropogenic contaminants, and clay minerals in soils. He is a Fellow of the Soil Science Society of America, the American Society of Agronomy, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Among my eight Sumi-e instruction books, this is number One. In my class half of the people use this.I even saw it at an artist gallery in Smithfield,Virginia, where a local artist had it in his shop and was using it. The book is small, the instructions concise, clear and to the point. No wasting of space in demonstrations and words. Great for the beginner and up.The book is small and light enough to carry around and review again and again. And it is very inspiring for any artist pursuing the art of sumie. And, above all, it is affordable - the price is right.

Easily accessible to children age 8 and up

Written in easy to remember verse, with perky color illustrations, "We're Off to Make 'Umrah" is a child's narrative to help understand the experience of performing 'Umrah by a devout Muslim family. A boy and his family make a journey to a sacred site to perform 'Umrah together. There are many special prayers and steps along the journey. Children are encouraged not to complain during 'Umrah. After a long plane flight and a bus ride, the boy arrives at Makkah, or Mecca. He and his father and mother and sister circle the Ka'bah seven times around to complete their tawaf. As they go, they repeat du'as, special prayers and sayings. They see the footprints of Maquam Ibrahim, their long distant forefather. Afterwards they find a special refreshing drink called zamzam water, then go on to Safa and Marwa. Again they climb and offer prayers and du'a, then run down like Hajar, who looked for water for her thirsty son. They run seven times between two hills, then their sa'i is finished. Afterwards the men get their hair shaved off in remembrance and the women cut off a bit of their hair. They change from their ceremonial clothing of ihram, and they are through with their 'Umrah experience. Next they visit Madinah to see the city of light and home of the Prophet. One day they will make Hajj, another sacred visit and ritual experience in a holy place. "We're Off to Make 'Umrah" contains a glossary and illustrated foldout poster with paper dolls of a boy and a girl both ordinary everyday clothes and sacred garments of ihram. The poster contains a praise prayer to Allah and a list of 11 steps to making 'Umrah. "We're Off to Make 'Umrah" is an excellent and fun children's descriptive book about a very special sequence of religious practices and observances common to Muslims everywhere. It is easily accessible to children age 8 and up.

A Must Buy for Families Planning to Visit Mecca with their Children!

"We're Off to Make Umrah" is an excellent easy to understand picture book for young children. It is especially useful in teaching them about the rituals of Umrah and Hajj. I read it to my children before going for Umrah. Now they love reading it on their own and remember their own experience of being in Mecca. This book is a must buy for families planning to visit Mecca with their children!

A boy and his sister and parents head off to spend time engaging in their spiritual practices. This little thin book outlines the key events in a rhyming verse. Note: Though the cover announces that the book includes a poster and paper dolls, these were not present in this library book.
