This book is very much like a dictionary of the British Army in WW1. It briefly covers a myriad of topics, in a somewhat similar fashion to Haythornthwaites WW1 source book, and as a consequence I found it an excellent reference book. It is thorough, and being a reference style book is a great starting point for information. If it is more detailed specifics then other books go into more detail as this covers such a wide range in an abbreviated fashion. It is nicely presented and I find it an excellent book.

an important missing link

If there is an heir to Chapelle's "History of the American Sailing Navy," it is this book. The format is somewhat similar, but with the inclusion of photos in addition to plans. This book picks up where Chapelle left off, with the early steam ships of the US Navy. These are the ships of fame of the Civil War, on which little good information is avaliable. The steam frigates are covered in detail, as well as the sea going sloops and gunboats. The section on the USS Michigan does not do her justice, nor is there a lot information on the engines of the period, but this book is an important missing link in US warship design history from the USS Constellation to the steel hulled ships of the Great White Fleet. Well worth the purchase price to a person interested in period naval archecture, as is VOL II, The Ironclads, and his book on Revenue Cutters.

A much overlooked bit of history

An interesting and curious Russian simulation for the PC called, "Ironclads: Anthology" is what really captured my interest in steam powered frigates, sloops and gunboats of the Civil War.

When you read about the Civil War, it is the land battles that dominate with the naval conflict usually a mere footnote. But the Federal navy experienced a fascinating evolution from an all sail navy to a steam navy very early in the 19th century. The first line of warships used in the Civil War were propeller driven, wooden steam vessels built by the US Navy in the 1840s and 50s.

This is a great, detailed, historical narrative about those ships that came to put a stranglehold on the South with an incredible 3500 mile long blockade. It is an in depth history of the several ships, ordinance, and machinery that did the job. Great photos. Some have never been published before. The steam engine and propeller were still highly experimental during this period. The US navy and many early ships suffered with absolutely mediocre power-plants. Much credit must go to the engineers who operated these ships, and who kept them running during war and bad weather!

A readable history of the U.S.Navy's transition from iron men and wooden ships to wooden men and Iron ships, with procurement fiascos equal to any today...... Say to say that the U.S.S. Hartford, of New Orleans and Mobile Bay fame, survived at the Brooklyn Navy Yard untill 1959, then sank at her moorings and was finally scrapped....UGH!

Excellent scholarly resource

"The Hebrew Prophets" is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to be a student of the Old Testament. Each of the books of the writing prophets is outlined with a basic general format that includes a biography of the author, a description of the time and place of the prophecies, and a summary of the book and the major themes. Because questions sometimes lie in the authorship (was Isaiah written by one person or more?) or time (Jonah, for example) of the prophecies, Newsome attempts to explore the sources of the disagreement and tends to lean towards the more moderate, scholarly assignments than the traditional ones. Thus, for example, Isaiah is treated in parts as if it were written by multiple authors.
Overall, I found the book to be very scholarly and yet very approachable. I was able to use this book to construct a Bible study on the minor prophets for a youth group, and it was very successful. I recommend it to anyone who would like to learn more about the Old Testament writings of the prophets.

I have used this text a number of times to teach college-level courses on the Latter Prophets. Newsome gives attention to historical and literary context without losing sight of the message of each book. This is a beneficial text for people who actually want to think about the Bible.

Pratical, easy to follow advice

Fleming's objective is to provide a way of using a map & compass that is easy to remember as well as being not intimidating, and she achieves these results remarkably well in her book Staying Found. I have been out in the woods backpacking off-trail and have been able to use these techniques successfully, not only "staying found" but also navigating to small hidden lakes. Carol in California is lucky - in MY area, the declination is currently 19 degrees. Considering this value drifts back & forth, and that being even one degree off when you're taking your compass bearing can get you seriously lost, I think I'll stick with June's method rather than draw lines on my map that change from year to year.

I don't recommend this book for beginners. You are either going to hit trail and stay on trail, or go off trail. If you never leave trail, you probably do not need a compass. If you go off trail you can get terribly lost, and you need a compass and map, and the knowledge of how to use them. This book has a few shortcuts to finding your way off trail, and some good tips on keeping to your route. These shortcuts and tips depend on orienting the map (moving it until it lines up with the topography) with true north-south according to your compass. This book is a lightweight compared to the Burns brothers book. It is not in error, but the approach to navigation can lead to confusion. Get the Burns brothers book and study it. Get a good compass with mirror and adjustable declination setting. Take those new toys and practice first before you head off into the boonies. Maybe some of the Fleming book can come in handy, as in setting up the tent according to the rising point of the sun, but you need a deeper understanding of navigation and compass to get off that trail and explore. See my review of the Burns book. And don't buy GPS or Altimeter without reading the Burns book first. As for drawing lines on the map: You would never bother with drawing lines at the angle of declination. You simply draw lines parallel to the edge of the topo so that you can take a bearing on the map. That is explained in the Burns book but not in the Flemming book. It would not hurt to read both books, but I think the Burns book is going to be your bible in wilderness navigation. Buy that one first, then maybe buy this one...

About the Author
Dr Monika Hestad is a brand and design strategist, an associate lecturer at Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in London and heads the consultancy Brand Valley Design. She has more than a decade's experience as a designer, and has conducted branding and design work in high-tech, FMCG and service sectors, private and public, working with brands including Nokia, Yellow Pages, Thrane & Thrane, Kvaerner, NokiaSiemens Networks, Mars, Stokke, Ringnes (Carlsberg), and Procter & Gamble. In addition to regular teaching in London and at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, she lectures at other prestigious institutions and teaches entrepreneurs and designers in Beijing and Seoul. Hestad has a Masters in Industrial Design from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design and a PhD in Branding and Design from the same school.
