Thorough and well paced

I am an avid royal reader, and have become jaded by too many royal books that rehash the same old tired tales from one generation to the next. This book announces in the beginning that it is a re-release of one written 30 years before. No problem. It was good then, and it is still good now.
It captures the boy, the man, the father, husband, and King. There were no revelations, just simple history.

If you have read The Kings Speech (NOT the movie screenplay...totally different) this is an excellent read and fills in the history of the life of the man. I highly recommend both this book and the authored version of The Kings Speech for anyone interested in this type of history.

George VI accidentally became the King after his brother abdicated because he wanted to marry a divorced American. I knew very little about George VI except that he is the father of current British monarch Queen Elizabeth and younger brother of famous king who gave up his thrown for love.
Albert, nicknamed Bertie, who became King George VI, had to overcome many obstacles in his life, including speech impediment. Most of his life, he was under the shadow of his more famous and popular brother Edward VIII. Nonetheless, he was a good husband, great father, and did what he was suppose to do diligently.
This book is a good read on his life.

This book focuses on eight spatial scales (body, home, community, institutions, the street, the city, rual and nation). Each of these spaces represents the intersection of a range of connections, interrelations and movements of different people who have very different ways of participating in, understanding or belonging to them. Each chapter therefore explores how social identities (gender, race, class, sexuality) and relations are constructed in, and through these spaces, and how the meanings and uses of these spaces are contested by their different occupants. Questions of homogeneity and difference, control and disorder, and social and exclusion run throughout the text.

Topics covered include: body modification, homelessness, neighbourhood and cyber communities, the workplace, fear of crime, policing, gentrification, whiteness, leisure activities, citizenship and nationalism. Guides to further reading, and essay questions are provided at the end of each chapter. A glossary defining key words and a guide to how to do a project in social geography are both included at the end of the book.

Gill Valentine is a Professor of Geography at the University of Sheffield.

About the Author
Professor Valentine has held prestigious international visiting fellowships at the Universities of Sydney, Australia and Otago, New Zealand and has visited and given keynote addresses at a range of prestigious international conferences. She was co-founder and co-editor of the international journal Social and Cultural Geography, and co-edited Gender, Place and Culture. She has undertaken international research in Europe, Africa and the USA and is committed to developing the University of Sheffield's international strategy within the Faculty of Social Sciences.

This book is a wonderful book that tells history the way it truly happened based upon as much research as I've been able to get my hands on. Yet this book should never be listed for such a price. Nearly $500? Try 15.99 British Pounds or even Euro's. If I were a crook I would buy up from some of the English sites such as Karnac Books and sell away, on Amazon.com. Instead, I'm suggesting you search out information hidden for so long and made to be almost impossible for everyday people to access; and look on the Deep Web or Deep Net, as well as on other book seller sites.

Amazing little book, make me want to read more, research more, know more!

I have just completed this book; yet, I am left hanging, hungry for more! The book was too short to my liking! I wish Obenga could go on and on and never stop developing his approach on comparative linguistic between the "hamito-semitic" fallacy in which mainstream analysts classify Ancient Egypt and the Egyptian setting as an African language. More importantly, I discovered the fact that our so called modern world, in which a pseudo equality is proned between individuals, is a disfiguration of the ancient African universalist approach to individual relation. The ancient Egyptians had understood that man and woman, male or femelle, cannot be dissected and separated and analyzed separately; for, they necessarily need each other apport for the future! Establishing a stratified society in which one gender is superior was therefore a dear insult to nature itself! This is of extreme importance given the sexist and feministic world in which we live. Every individual must therefore be judged solely by his ability and contribution to the society!
I have been a proud student of Cheikh anta diop; yet I must say that Obenga on the other hand takes us inside the mind and social construct of Ancient egypt like no other Author before.
He makes me see the correlation between ancient Egypt and Africa and more importantly, he provides me with ideas and concepts on how to establish sound social structure for the future of the African people. I have been a libertarian for quite a time now and the more I read about ancient Egypt, the more I dissect some important Libertarian concept in their philosophy of life and their view of the world.
Liberty and justice is an important aspect of today's world struggle against hegelianism and historicism, and an analysis of Ancient Kmet provide us with the most ancient philosophical study based on the respect of the individual, of his right and property and also on his duty to himself, to the god and to society in general. This gives me high hope for I am beginning clearly establish a foundation upon which we can create a modern African society, more humane, modern and economically wealthy and most importantly, spiritualy revived!

Zeckendorf pioneered the way for many real estate transactions that are now common. What he did with parcelling out the Empire State Building is a fantastic thing to read about. The book is a great read. I'm trying to copy much of his philosophy. Hey if a baker can bake the same piece of bread in NYC as he can in Denver, CO, I should hit paydirt! I'm a small-time Realtor compared to Zeckendorf. This autobiography deals straight with the man and how his mind functioned so he could become incredibly wealthy. And he worked hard AND smart during his career. This book will make you think. You will get understanding in the game of negotiating. You will learn how to pick the right friends and business associates. You will learn lots and lots of stuff that will help you in your real estate career.

Colourful writing by a colourful character

This little book provides a very personal and sometimes colourful account of the chronicles of the rise and fall of Webb & Knapp, with particular emphasis on Zeckendorf's companies role in the early years of urban redevelopment. Some extracts:
- On travelling: "We travelled in high style in a chaffeur-driven car through France, across Switzerland, and down to Italy, sampling wines, museums, cathedrals and vistas" (p.25)
- On socializing: "...the Rocky Mountain News gleefully produced a picture of me a la cowboy and some of the wedding guests al fresco" (p.130)
- On leverage: "I was often in debt, sometimes little more than two jumps ahead of the sheriff, and forever scrambling for some way to turn an extra dollar. Whenever I did get a little money ahead, I tried to put it to work" (p.32)
- On ideas: "That night I could hardly sleep as I chased my own ideas, tied them down with facts and figures, altered them, made compromises, returned to original notions, and finally realized I was no dealing with fantasy but with genuine possibility" (p.66)
- On testosterone: "...with our great, masculine building standing up against the Montreal skyline like a man surrounded by boys..." (p.195)
- On attitude: "We hereby offer to the UN approximately 17 acres...for any price they wish to pay" (p.69)

A fascinating man...

Not since the days of the Louisiana Purchase has America seen any bigger real estate transactions than those executed by William Zeckendorf, the derring-do head of Webb & Knapp. Figuring with supersonic speed and an uncanny flair for making money, the flamboyant impressario bought and sold property, remodeled whole sections of New York, Denver, Washington, Montreal and Dallas, and moved the UN, the capital of the world, to New York. At the peak of his power, he was a man with the Midas touch in an age of computers.

He played a real life game of Monopoly and won the largest real estate empire in the world...so large, in fact, that Wall Street tottered when he went bankrupt. And bankrupt he was, but never in spirit.

An autobiography bursting with vitality, enthusiasm, and financial know-how, he reveals himself as a visionary whose creativeness and sense of adventure are matched only by his unalloyed joy at being able to successfully juggle a dozen incredibly complicated transactions at once.

Zeckendorf's grandfather was a German immigrant and Indian trader who, in 1868, established a store in Tucson, Arizona (Steindorf's). William was born in Paris, Illinois, in 1905.

The new nation of the United States looked to authors such as Locke, Hume, Harrington, and Sydney for guidance in their search for a new republicanism, adding to the development of constitutional thought and practice. In France the influence of Rousseau was apparent in the revolutionary constitution, and Sieyes was an active participant in its discussion and design.
