About the Author

Mark Walker

Mark Walker has been working with computers since a very early age, starting out with programming the Sinclair ZX Spectrum. After graduating from Cardiff University, he moved to France, starting a 17-year (so far) career in SAP development, first on the SAP ERP, then moving to SAP BW in 2004. He specializes in process optimization, especially in the SAP BPS and BI-IP modules. He's been following SAP HANA since its release in 2011, and is a certified HANA Application Associate since early 2012.

Mark has been working for the last six years for Censio, a consultancy in Paris, France, which has expertise in SAP, Microstrategy, Business Objects, and Microsoft BI technologies. During that time he's worked on several end-to-end projects for some prestigious clients, and done some missions in SAP's name.

In November 2012, he published SAP HANA Starter, Packt Publishing, a small book about getting a foothold in the SAP HANA world.

Mostly Information Modeling, not Software Development

Please note: the publisher provided a free copy of the digital version of the book to me for the purposes of review.

I have mixed feelings about this book. Most the content is pretty good, but there are two major points I would make against this book which I think potential readers should take into consideration.

1. The title and description is completely inaccurate. This isn't a book about Software Development on HANA. It is a book about Information Modeling on HANA. It doesn't cover SQLScript Procedures/AFL/Table Creation/Schemas/Sequences/etc. It is OK for information modeling; but that alone. If your focus is only learning more about Information Modeling, then this is probably a source you should check out. However if you want holistic SAP HANA Development, you will certainly be disappointed by how much this book doesn't cover.

2. While true that it contains one chapter on XSJS/UI5; the approach suggested by this chapter is completely wrong. I can't possibly stress this enough: I strongly warn people that the information in this chapter should largely be avoided at all costs and will actually lead you down a very incorrect path. I think the author completely misunderstands how XSJS should work and that misunderstanding comes out strongly in this chapter. The author proposes using XSJS to generate HTML mixed with your data. This is so completely against everything SAP suggests for the use of UI5 and XSJS. XSJS services should be pure data and contain no UI formating. The UI should be client side and only call XSJS services as REST services when data is needed or events which need processing on the server occur.

Furthermore I tracked a list of smaller items of inaccuracy and outright incorrect information.

My overall opinion: The author is someone who is strong in creating information models (Attribute/Analytic/Calculation views), but doesn't really have good experience with SAP HANA Development in the broader sense. If the book had only been advertised and contained information on this subset, it would actually be quite good. However by trying to expand into areas the author doesn't really understand, he does a disservice to the reader.

About the Author
ASANGA was a fourth-century Indian adept and philosopher, author of the foundational works of the Yogācāra school of Buddhist philosophy. ARTEMUS B. ENGLE received a PhD in Buddhist studies from the University of Wisconsin and has studied Tibetan Buddhism for more than forty years. He teaches Tibetan language and Buddhist doctrine at the Mahayana Sutra and Tantra Center in Howell, New Jersey, and has published numerous translations of works by Indian and Tibetan masters. He has been a Tsadra Foundation Fellow since 2005.

A very important addition to the world's knowledge of Mahayana Buddhism. A must-have for all aspiring bodhisattvas and buddhas (since the teaching does explain the sutra path to enlightenment). Much kudos to Art Bengle and the Tcadra Foundation for producing this exceptional translation of Arya Asanga's classic epic on the doctrine of the non-duality of great compassion and great emptiness, which is the reality or suchness of all phenomena, which is void yet radiant.

Good classroom edition

I like teaching this novel, but I don't have time to teach the full text. This abridgement does a good job of capturing the fullness of the story and the characters in about 40% of the pages. I like the historical timelines at the beginning and the Notes sections at the end. My students find the novel easy to manage, too.

ABRIDGED - falsely labeled

I am very disappointed that the copy is advertised as "complete and unabridged" - right on the cover! This is definitely NOT complete or unabridged. Les Miserables is a fantastic book, but I would not recommend this publication by "Enriched Classics". Nor will I buy any from this publishing company again. I believe they should label their books honestly and correctly. If you want to read an unabridged version, do not buy this book.

Trashy, Inept, and Deceptive Treatment of a Classic

Nowhere in this edition does it say whether the book is abridged or unabridged. Nowhere does it say who the translator is. Wouldn't these be basic facts a customer is entitled to know?

Rather ironic omissions for an "enriched" edition allegedly full of supplementary helpful information.

Even worse, I strongly suspect (from another version of this 'enriched' edition on Amazon) that the translator is Charles Wilbour, a man who seems to always pop up as the translator of many French novels, but a man who should never be allowed near the French language:

As someone who knows French, I counted on just the first half page -eight- different unclear - or just plain wrong - translations. Some of them render a French word into a little known,stilted, or archaic English word.

That's when I said "Ah! This has to be Wilbour" . . . And I tossed the book with great force at the radiator.

GOOD HISTORY OF AMAZON RELATED EVENTS, ONLY OK ANALYSIS

In this book, the author intends to initially describe the history of major projects and dreams for the Amazon through military and civilian rule in Brazil. The facts are indeed interesting and likely correct. The author describes in good detail the grand dreams of the military government to develop the region. Then he describes the sea change that occured when democracy returned. With democracy, there was a renewed interest in preservation.

However, the analysis is difficult to swallow from a few perspectives:

1. Much of the analysis is written from a traditional marxist point of view, with a veil of class conflict, which in this case means poor indians and farmers vs international interests. It often feels like he simplifies scenarios by bringing in the marxist class conflict perspective to explain situations that are in fact more complex than that.

2. Along with the marxist perspective, any explorer in search of profit is poorly portrayed in the book. The author focuses on government action and plays down private enterprise in the Amazon as basically undesirable. It becomes clear quite quickly that the author does not believe in capitalism.

3. There is a main thesis, that democracy brings about preservation. Though it seems to be true, the book forcefully tries to fit every single fact to match the thesis. Some conclusions do not seem warranted.

Overall, I would not recommend this to someone just getting acquainted with the region. If you are knowledgeable of the economics and sociology of the Amazon, then this is a good book to give you a different non-mainstream somewhat biased perspective.

Definitely get this book!!!!!!!!!

Lena, I absolutely LUVED this book, just like all your previous ones. I appreciate your take on domestic abuse in a long term scenario. It was intense and on point.
Thank you for this realistic perspective and I hope we don't have to wait to much longer to wait for the follow up to this introduction.
I gave it 4 in place of five stars, because I absolutely loath waiting to continue a story:-)

What a horrible book! I don't even know where to start.The heroine was sleeping with both her loser boyfriend ( who abused her both physically and emotionally) and her boss.....yuck! The "hero" Kevin was no alpha male, he was weak, could not come up with a solution to keep his girlfriend safe. Oh the part he watched his girlfriend being raped by her ex and he was to slow to take action.......that angered me beyond words. I fail to understand how the author thought it was a good idea to let it go that far. Kevin was certainly not the kind of hero I am used to reading about in these types of books. So not reading the sequel to this. What a waste of money

This is a bunch of crapola

The main character is a victim of domestic violence and rape. The instant relationship with her boss is laughable at best. And Franklin, her boyfriend (or rather abuser/stalker), is nitwit. How they ended up together would have been a more interesting story? But who wants to be even more depressed than reading this story.

My advice is to pass on this book, and this is coming from someone that downloaded it free as a prime member.
