Danny Goodman felt that he couldn't trust any of the documentation on Dynamic HTML (DHTML) that he read (too many contradictions), so he wrote this book as a reference for working with his own clients. After testing tags and techniques on multiple releases of the main browsers, Goodman came up with very practical information--some of which you may not find in any other resource.

Goodman assumes a solid foundation, if not expertise, in basic HTML and an understanding of what DHTML is all about. From those assumptions, he presents a meaty, information-dense volume. The first of the book's four sections discusses industry standards and how to apply the basic principles of DHTML. He emphasizes the differences in Web browsers and discusses how to build pages so that they work well in both Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. About the Author

Danny Goodman has been writing about personal computers and consumer electronics since the late 1970s. Danny was born in Chicago, Illinois during the Truman Administration. He earned a B.A. and M.A. in Classical Antiquity from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. You wanted DHTML? You got DHTML!

I've purchased several books (Javascript: the Definitive Guide, Netscape ONE Developers Guide, etc) relating to Javascript and Web development. I recently became interested in the functionality that DHTML provides and although I have several books on Javascript, I had nothing which directly references DHTML techniques. This is the book if you want to learn BOTH Javascript AND DHTML - the two are linked inextricably as you'll find if you purchase this book.
On the cover, you'll see in smallish lettering "A Comprehensive Resource for HTML, CSS, DOM & JavaScript" - they're not kidding.
Section one contains Applying Dynamic HTML information and covers everything from cross-platform techniques to actual scripting of dynamic events on your webpages.
Section two contains all the reference sections - HTML, Document Objects, Style Sheet Attributes, and a Javascript Core Language reference. This provides everything from supporting browser versions to reference examples, properties and methods for each element - it is exhaustive.
Section three provides cross references so you can find objects or HTML attributes and what elements support them. Ever want to know exactly which objects support the ONCLICK event handler? - here's where you'd go...
Even the 4 appendixes are useful and include a table of color names and RGB values, HTML character entities (special characters), a listing of keyboard events and their character values (useful for initiating code when specific keys are pressed), and finally a reference area for Internet Explorer commands not specifically covered by the document object model.
This is a must buy book for any HTML developer out there - even if you're not at the DHTML level yet.

Great manual on portable modern HTML

While this book may be a bit intimidating for first-time web authors, it is an incredibly useful manual for those who know the basics of HTML and need a reference to newer features and standards.
The first section is an extremely well-written overview of modern HTML: the history and philosophies behind CSS, javascript, the Document Object Model, and the designs of the two major browsers, as well as some excellent examples of writing portable code to access these features from different platforms and browsers. The clarity of the writing here is a very pleasant surprise from what is really just a reference manual and simply doesn't need to be this good. This section alone is probably enough to bring most "tag-only" authors up to date on the newer dynamic technologies.
It is the reference sections, however, for which most readers will buy this book, and they are excellent. There are comprehensive listings of HTML tags (including rendering behavior as well as scriptable attributes), javascript primitives, and DOM structures. Most importantly, every entry in the reference section is labelled very clearly with which browser and/or standards versions support it, a crucial piece of information to cross-platform authors which is left out of many similar books.
All in all, this book may be the only reference a developer really needs on his bookshelf for writing dynamic HTML. The only major complaint I have is that the author is (understandably) very script-centric, and never sufficiently discusses the down side of using heavily scripted pages when static pages or server-side scripts may suffice.

Every Web Author Should Have One!

As a "reference" book (that is, not a tutorial or manual or *dummies* book) is meant to be used by people already familiar with what they are doing and need a comprehensive source to look something up, this book is the perfect model of a great reference work and belongs on every web deleloper's desk. It offers detailed info on HTML elements, DOM, CSS, and JavaScript. As this is a DHTML reference, the Javascript section is sorely lacking, though. A great feature is that for each element, property and attribute, it tells you which versions of Netscape and IE supports that element. Descriptions and examples are also provided for each entry. It also briefly explains how to use DHTML and cross-platform problems. Another consideration is that since this is such a large reference, it takes a little time to get used to its organization and how to look things up. But this is the one web book I keep referring back to all the time.

Although there a lot of typos and no index for key terms, this textbook does include a lot of interesting perspectives I wasn't exposed to before. The quality is inconsistent, but when done right I found this textbook introduced me to important ideas in sustainability.

In present-day Boston, dull suburban mother and cheated-on wife Ella Rubinstein takes a job as a reader for a literary agent and becomes entranced by Aziz Zahara, the author of a manuscript about the relationship between 13th-century poet Rumi and Sufi mystic Shams that, for better or for worse, becomes a story-within-a-story. I so wanted to love this book . . .

I tried hard to overlook its quirks, but I found myself increasingly put off by the author's fondness for telling rather than showing and by the wooden characters (especially, sadly, Rumi and Shams) who seem to endlessly proclaim their beliefs and feelings without having any inner lives. I couldn't connect much with any of them. Also, the book seems carelessly edited. In one instance, the character of Rumi's wife gives a first-person account of his dismay when she cleaned the books in his library during their first year of marriage: yet a few sentences further on, she mentions this happening "after eight years of marriage". Word choices sometimes seem inappropriate or at least clumsy, which may be due to the author writing in English rather than Turkish (still, an editor should have helped with that).

I did stay with it until the end, due to the appeal of the subject matter, the historical period, some interesting perspectives on Islam and the Abrahamic religions, and the beguiling Forty Rules themselves. Alas, I can only give it a lukewarm recommendation.

Such a delight - I didn't want it to end!

This book is like butter - soooooooo delicious and so necessary. It's been such a long time since I read a book I love this much! Wonderful story - historically and spiritually. Yes the contemporary story of Ella - her character is kind of annoying - BUT I think the author did that on purpose so you judge her and thereby later in the story can examine your capacity for compassion (or lack thereof) as one of the most important Forty Rules. I'm already looking for my next book by this same author. So you can check my review style against what you might like: super boring/inane fiction books I've read recently - Girl on The Train, Gone Girl, and the super disturbing, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. If you loved those books, then The Forty Rules of Love may be too deep for you!

A charming, witty story punctuated by the wisdom of the ages.

A charming, witty story punctuated by the wisdom of the ages. Right away, Elif Shafik tells us what will happen to Shams of Tabriz at the end of the story, but this is quite skilful; what is important about the story is the tortuous route that Shams chose to take to that final pass, not the event itself. Additionally the modern story makes the ancient tale much more poignant and relevant than it would have been told on its own.

The tragic nature of both ancient and modern tales serves to highlight the joy of the Sufi message; all of us have divinity within and only need to search for it. The backdrop of life can be immensely distracting or just the right experience to follow this quest. It only depends on your point of view, some discipline and you can grasp hold of that lasting joy.

Shams, the iconoclast, who consistently destroys the empty notions which litter his faith, is a familiar figure to this Zen Buddhist reader. 'If you see the Buddha, kill him.' There is no general notion of Buddha that is of any use because we need to experience what he means at first hand. Only then can we understand his teachings fully. But that journey is entirely personal. Sufism puts across the same message and I find this very comforting.

Being a complete newcomer to Sufism, I have learned a great amount here and want to know more. Any book that has this kind of effect on me ranks very highly in my estimation.

Reggie knows what it’s like to feel like you don’t belong someplace. He was born and raised among the Fifth Avenue elite, but is only barely tolerated these days. His friends and family don’t understand how he can spend all of his time treating the city’s poor at his clinic, or what he could possibly see in his brother’s little deaf student. But the more time he spends in Annie’s company, the more intrigued he is by her strength, determination, and compassion.

Just when the two of them figure they’ve reached an understanding, they get the worst possible news from Annie’s family in Cheyenne. Now they’re stuck together in a mad dash across the country, dreading what they’ll find at the end. It’s a crummy way to spend Christmas Eve, and Reggie knows that he might lose her forever when they reach their destination. He’ll need to figure out a way to show her that he can see her for who she truly is.

Which is good, because all she wants for Christmas is for him to hear the words she’s not saying.

Great romance!

This is the first book by Caroline Lee that I've read and I loved this novella. This story is part of a series that in the beginning I was afraid I was missing out on a lot of the background of the series and would be lost in the story. To my great surprise I was not lost at all and even though I'd not read the other books the way Ms. Lee describe the past characters I got to know them in a sense. Annie and Reggie have known each other for some years and admired each other from afar. Seeing each other only by the visits Reggie payed to his brother Sebastian who is married to one of Annie's good friends. Annie has been deaf since the age of 3 and Sebastian has fought her over the years to speak so she may fit into society. Annie was give an opportunity to spend Christmas in New York with Sebastian and Reggie's family. She travels across the country by herself on the adventure of a lifetime. She is such a strong character, self confident and smart. She's probably one of my favorite heroine of the year. Reggie is a smart and caring hero that has turned his life around and become a doctor. He's thrilled to be able to spend time with Annie. He also seems to be the only person there who understands Annie. They have such a wonderful and sweet romance. I just about hugged my iPad when I was done reading the story.
The only thing I didn't like about the book was how much Ms. Lee had Annie doubting her self worth. I understood her longing to fit into the perfect society of New York (with people who did not understand or deserve she friendship) but I think it was overdone. Because to me Annie was a very strong woman who had overcome her disability and shined.

I can not wait to go back and read the rest of the series.

I really enjoyed this story. It's a short story that doesn't take very long to read but, it packs a punch. It's got some amazing characters and some really dreamy moments. Check out Caroline Lee's new novel. You won't be disappointed!

Imperfectly Perfect

Where They Belong is a beautiful Christmas love story set at the end of the nineteenth century. Annie, deaf since three years of age due to a bout of German measles, has come to New York City to experience the social season with her oralist mentor's family. She quickly finds that their world is 180 degrees from her previous life. The only person to whom she relates is Reggie, the youngest sibling, who is considered a disappointment by his family, because he has left left the upper echelons of society to become a medical doctor. Reggie is compassionate, understanding, and kind, and tries to be present to assist Annie when possible. It is a joy to watch the two turn friendship into a deeper relationship.

I appreciated the author's depth of comprehension of Annie's communication problems and Reggie's attempts to work through them. This book has joy...I could feel Reggie's and Annie's reaction to each other. But it also contained sadness, and I cried a couple times. I plan to read the previous books in the series, since this is my first encounter with The Sweet Cheyenne Quartet.

About the Author

James McWilliams and R. James Steel are avid military historians. They have collaborated on two previous books on World War I: The Suicide Battalion (1978, 1990) and Gas! The Battle for Ypres, 1915 (1989) - as well as a unit history - The Battery (1996). R. James Steel is also the author of The Men Who Marched Away: Canada's Infantry in World War I, 1914-1918 (1989).

Bigger Canadian success than Vimy Ridge

McWilliams and Steele have done a great job in bringing together many previously published sources to give an overview of this most important battle. For the first and last time the Canadian and Australian Corps fought side by side and the combination was devastating to the Imperial German Army. On the right flank the French Army kept pace with the Canadians. On the left flank the British had trouble keeping up with the Australians as they had more difficult terrain to cover. Nevertheless the combined force tore a gaping hole in the German lines and led General Ludendorf to declare it the Black Day of the German Army in the First World War.
While my interest was in the Canadians, I found the sections on the other armies well done. The British advance was much slower than the Australian and Canadian advances on the first day and the authors explain this in terms of the ground the British had to cover and the tactical situation as the battle began.
I especially liked the way the authors were able to describe the tank actions. It was the second major use of tanks in the First World War and their presence on the battlefield helped achieve the first day objectives. It was also evident that even in a breakthrough battle cavalry could not operate in their 19th century role.
There is an excellent section on the use of air power, in fact on its misuse as the planes of the time could not carry enough bombs to isolate the German front line from its rear echelons. The planes would have been better used in close support.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable read!

Excellent!

My grandfather was wounded just near Amiens in 1918, so I was anxious to find out more about WW1, and especially around Amiens. As he was in the CEF, I was particularly interested in the Canadian participations of WW1 especially around Amiens. I got my answers in this book - a well written, very well researched and thoroughly educational work! I send my thanks to the author for a splendid work on a subject near and dear to me.

Yet, textbooks ignore the scientific proof that contradicts the myth of a spinning and orbiting globe. Christian schools have been hoodwinked into teaching heliocentrism, despite the clear teaching in the bible that the earth is not a sphere and does not move. This book reveals the evil forces behind the heliocentric deception, and why scientists and the Christian churches have gone along with it.

Very persuasive, well researched

Phenomenal book. Having read Zetetic Astronomy immediately prior, I was familiar with some of the arguments. But Hendrie is a little bit more thorough and convincing in his arguments. Furthermore, he has the benefit of high-res photo evidence, which Rowbotham did not have at his disposal. I was pleased to see Hendrie delve into the moon hoax, another subject I've been interested in. I've tried twice to get through Dark Mission by Richard Hoagland and twice have failed. The book is dry and, to me, not very believable. So I was pleased again when Hendrie affirmed a thought I had about Hoagland. Quote: "Bill Kaysing has good reason to believe that Hoagland is a shill working for NASA, who is trying to divert attention away from the fact that NASA never went to the moon." (p. 183) The final half of the book turns toward the pervasive influence of Judaism throughout the world, including science. This was an unexpected twist, but it fits perfectly -- and, again, dovetails nicely with my research into the Holocaust, Zionism, false flags, etc. The book's primary shortcoming is that it does not address the issue of satellites. I have been looking for a comprehensive text or video on this subject, but have not found one yet. So far, I have suggested this book to my dad and a friend, both of whom have said they will read it.

Do Not Miss This Book!

This book is not to be missed. The truths it reveals have long been stolen from the Church and need to be restored. The author has done this simply, honestly, and convincingly. I predict that this book will rival in effect, power and scope the effect that Martin Luther had on the church and world of His day and am so grateful that it was made available to me in our time. Anyone who loves God and His Word will be exceedingly blessed to read this book.

I enjoyed the book

I enjoyed the book. It starts out with a satisfactory explaination and decent evidence to prove that the earth is flat. He quotes from several of the earlier writers that have already done a great job in this regard. The author goes on to present a good picture of the who, what, where & why the heliocentric hoax was perpetrated on the world in first place and this is where the book really starts to take off. He does a great job of connecting the dots for the reader here. Lots of source references and foot notes too. Reading this book is definitely worth your time.
