Pleasantly suprised

A bit of a surprise. At first glance, going by the cover, this book gave every indicator it was going to be a bit of a waste. The cover, a pretty girl with an `oooh, ouch oh God yeeah!' look on her face, looking square into the lens and looking way too much like it was staged.

However, reading the book and looking at the photos and it is very different to first impressions. The text speaks about real spanking situations and people's experience with them and the photos rather than being all fairy floss and glamour are pretty obviously quite real.

I still hardly know my feelings about the subject, I'm not scared of it, I don't go out of my way to partake in it. However, for what it's worth I reckon this book is much more `real' hence more enlightening and stimulating than it would have been if it had been all the `pretty little things' pretending to be in a spanking situation, hammed up glamour.

First impressions were "Oh dear, this looks like it'll be garbage". Later and lasting impressions were-"mmmm, that was a pleasant little detour!" It's not even really my genre but worth a lookie see for a sense of good clean stimulation and maybe even a better understanding what makes those who'd chew razor blades for a good spanking tick.

A book of color photographs that are imaginative and clever.

IMAGINE by Erik Johansson is a photography book. The photos are of outdoor scenes in countryside with a generally flat landscape, but there are also a few urban scenes. All of the photographs are manipulated, that is, the result of extensive Photoshopping. I am not sure of the photographs can be taken seriously as "art." The intent of the photographs is to provoke amazement and pleasure. As such, the overall impact of the photographs is similar to the clever illustrations by DAVID WIESNER in his books called, Tuesday, Hurricane, and June 29, 1999. That said, I do think that it is interesting to compare Erik Johansson's photographs with the works of other artists. Some of these comparisons are disclosed below. The photographs are of manipulated landscapes. Of course, other photographers have created manipulated landscapes. See, for example, Altered Landscapes: The Photographs of John Pfahl (Untitled Series, No. 26), and JERRY UELSMANN's book: Uelsmann: Process and Perception (1985).

MAN IN CANOE. This photo shows a man standing in his canoe. The canoe is at the edge of a lake, but the edge of the lake takes the form of fragments of glass mirrors, that give way gradually to bare ground.

CANVAS TARP IN MEADOW. This photo shows a man pulling a black-colored canvas tarp through a country meadow. But the canvas tarp blends in with and is seamlessly continuous with a 1-lane road.

MISTY LAKE. A misty lake in a wilderness area has reflections of the sky above, and of nearby trees. If you just look at the lake, it looks just like the sky. A little boat is tied to a stake or a rock at the edge of the lake. But the boat does not float on the water. Instead, the boat hangs limply into the reflection of the sky.

WALLPAPER. A man stands on a ladder hanging sheets of wallpaper from a cable. The cable is strung from a line of about ten poles, resembling telephone poles. The sheets have images painted on them. The images are photo-realistic images of the surrounding area. Thus, the images on the hanging sheets reproduces what is in the distance. This photograph is reminiscent in feeling or in meaning of some of the sculptures by Christo V. Javacheff, otherwise known as "Christo." Christo is known for his wrapped buildings, and for his fence known as "Christo's fence," which was exhibited in Marin County near San Francisco.

APARTMENTS ON MESA. This photograph shows an elegant apartment building situated on top of a mesa. The mesa is like those found in CANYON DE CHELLY in Arizona or in MONUMENT VALLEY. A thick cloud cover surrounds the mesa. This photograph is reminiscent of an untitled but very famous photograph by JERRY UHELSMAN, showing an old wooden house that appears to be growing out of a tree stump. The photograph is called, "Untitled (1982)." Jerry Uhelsman's photograph is shown in all of the Twilight Zone episodes that were organized by actor Forrest Whitaker.

SPHERE. This photo shows an undistinguished countryside in the wintertime. Here and there, the ground is covered with snow. A 1-lane road is shown, and a man stands by his parked automobile. In front of the man is a 30-foot sphere that is colorless and like a mirror. The mirror contains the reflections of the countryside and of the road and automobile. This is similar to ARNALDO POMODORO's reflective spheres, for example, of his sculpture called "Sphere Within a Sphere" (1991-1993), which is displayed at Visitor's Plaza at United Nations.

TIC-TAC-TOE. The image is of a busy roadway in a city. The road has a center divider, with traffic traveling to the left on the far side of the divider, and to the near side of the divider a crew of men is busy with repair work. But it is not typical road repair work. A steam shovel is busy playing tic-tac-toe. The shovel has already dug up part of the road to create the hash mark, and the steam shovel is busy digging an "O" and an "X." Apparently, only one party is playing the game, namely, the man who is operating the steam shovel. This is a very clever image.

A complicated man, trapped in his own charisma

This is autobiography, and like all autobiography, I suggest getting a context, not just for the battles and generals of the Texas War of Independence and Mexican-American War, but of the very different economic and political contexts of the two nations. I read and recommend: 1. Timothy L. Henderson's "A Glorious Defeat", which was a wonderful overview of the economic and political environments of both countries during this time. The US was older than Mexico only about 40 years, but the American Nation did exist (though divided by slavery)even as Mexico was a mixture of an aristocratic, politically and economically powerful institutional Catholic hierarchy; a racist based class structure (pure Euro-Spanish, Euro-British and Euro-French; not-quite white Mestizos; peasants, and divided Native Americans, from the more developed agrarian Natives in the South to the substance hunter gatherers in the northern deserts. The second book, by General John S.D. Eisenhower (son of the late president and five star general Dwight D. Antonio Lopez de Santana embodied politics and the weilding of power and influence, though not continuously after the end of the war, from Mexican independence until his decline in the 1870's. Mexico did not have a "center" (much like the United States since 1984 or so with the loss of its centrist Senator coalitions (e.g., Howard Baker, Everett Dirkson, Scoop Jackson, Warren Manguson, James Sasser, James Patric Moynahan, etc.). The divisions of Creole (descendents of the Euro-Spanish), urban Mestizo, rural peasant, the Native Americas; the alliances of the rich conservatives with the rich Catholic hierarchy vs the populists, made action and nation building impossible. Presidential terms lasted only months, evem, usually Santana's foray's into office then withdrawal to his plantations or to assume supreme generalship of the Army.

Against this backdrop: his autobiography. This is only Santana's view, his self-centered view written at the end of his life to attempt a favorable impression of his role in history: his view runs the genre of a simple man, sacrificing himself for his people and his country with no ulterior selfish motives. If he says his life was about nation building, he failed history's bar, unless substituting a constant external enemy for nationhood is enough. He impoverished his people, was a poor general, and built nothing, even as he substituted playing factions off against each other, changing political sides and agendas to suit the prevailing power factions to keep himself im power.

What emerges is the sadness of an obsessive power-seeker able to exercise charismatic magnetism, but without an internal compass pointing to anything but themselves. One sees here only a clear portrait of leaders willing to sham a populace while playing to the self-interested competing interests at the centers of power. One sees how such leaders manipulate the ideology of the components not only against themselves, but against the best interests and well being of the people and the nation as a whole.

Still, I am happy that I read this, though far from every word of his self-aggrandizing self-portrait. There is a sadness in it, not only of a man nearing his inevitable death, but one trying to "put the best face on it", twisting externally verifiable truth in the process.

Whilst I as person of Mexican descent am not a big fan of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana for the obvious reason. I can assure you that I was captivated by this book. It was a chance for me to hear him explain to me in his own words the many extraordinary things that he was not only a witness to but also a major participant in as he lived through one of the most interesting periods in Mexican history. From the time of the Independence to Mexico's devastating loss of more than half of her territory to the later years in his personal life. This book is remarkable, because it felt like I was stepping back in time and listening to this man's story in his own words as he told it. Of course Santa Ana ' s reason for writing this book is to give his side of the story from his triumphs down to his fall from grace. The man clearly did not want to go down as the traitor who gave up half of Mexico to the tyrants from the North. The author keeps footnotes on the bottom of the pages to correct Santa Ana whenever he says a half truth. Interesting read for anyone interested in either Mexican or American history as this man was a big part of both.
