Computer Architecture and Organization: An Integrated Approach, by Miles J. Murdocca, Vincent P. Heuring

An accessible introduction to computer systems and architecture

Anyone aspiring to more advanced studies in computer-related fields must gain an understanding of the two parallel aspects of the modern digital computer: programming methodology and the underlying machine architecture. The uniquely integrated approach of Computer Architecture and Organization connects the programmer's view of a computer system with the associated hardware and peripheral devices, providing a thorough, three-dimensional view of what goes on inside the machine.

Covering all the major topics normally found in a first course in computer architecture, the text focuses on the essentials including the instruction set architecture (ISA), network-related issues, and programming methodology. Using "real world" case studies to put the information into perspective, the chapters examine:
* Data representation
* Arithmetic
* The instruction set architecture
* Datapath and Control
* Languages and the machine
* Memory
* Buses and peripherals
* Networking and communication
* Advanced computer architecture

A valuable feature of this book is the use of ARC, a subset of the SPARC processor, for an instruction set architecture. A platform-independent ARCTools suite, containing an assembler and simulator for the ARC ISA, that supports the examples used in the book is available. Better yet, the content is supplemented by online problem sets available through WileyPlus.

Balanced and thoughtfully designed for use as either a classroom text or self-study guide, Computer Architecture and Organization: An Integrated Approach will put you solidly on track for advancing to higher levels in computer-related disciplines.

Nice book.
By FABRICIO CARVALHO
I am electrical engineer and found this book very easy to understand. The case study provided by the authors (ARC - a risc computer) is good in the way that it gives the reader the opportunity to map general concepts to a very simple machine architecture. The simulator, provided in the authors' website, is also very helpful. As negative points, I found the exercises, by end of the chapters, very easy and without any challenge for the students, moreover, there are many typos throughout the book (including diagrams). I do recomend this book, specially for beginners in the field.

Great resource
By Me
This is a very good and informative book. for the most part It is very detailed.
Things that would make it better: Some topics such as grs bits are not covered very well. Supplementary material is needed as a result. Also, this book does NOT have an appendix consisting of a section for chapter answers (odd or even). This really would be useful to have.

Confusing Explanations and Diagrams
By Richard Monette
I was required to use this book for a course and found that, while it touched on the right topics, the explanations and diagrams were generally poorly presented and unnecessarily confusing. Honestly, I frequently found that free articles on Wikipedia were superior. Given that there are books which are routinely reviewed as being much better (Hennessey/Patterson etc.) I would strongly urge students and teachers to consider a different textbook.

Amazon.com Review
Indie graphic novelist Gene Yang's intelligent and emotionally challenging American Born Chinese is made up of three individual plotlines: the determined efforts of the Chinese folk hero Monkey King to shed his humble roots and be revered as a god; the struggles faced by Jin Wang, a lonely Asian American middle school student who would do anything to fit in with his white classmates; and the sitcom plight of Danny, an All-American teen so shamed by his Chinese cousin Chin-Kee (a purposefully painful ethnic stereotype) that he is forced to change schools. Each story works well on its own, but Yang engineers a clever convergence of these parallel tales into a powerful climax that destroys the hateful stereotype of Chin-Kee, while leaving both Jin Wang and the Monkey King satisfied and happy to be who they are.

Yang skillfully weaves these affecting, often humorous stories together to create a masterful commentary about race, identity, and self-acceptance that has earned him a spot as a finalist for the National Book Award for Young People. The artwork, rendered in a chromatically cool palette, is crisp and clear, with clean white space around center panels that sharply focuses the reader's attention in on Yang's achingly familiar characters. There isn't an adolescent alive who won't be able to relate to Jin's wish to be someone other than who he is, and his gradual realization that there is no better feeling than being comfortable in your own skin.--Jennifer Hubert

From Publishers Weekly
As alienated kids go, Jin Wang is fairly run-of-the-mill: he eats lunch by himself in a corner of the schoolyard, gets picked on by bullies and jocks and develops a sweat-inducing crush on a pretty classmate. And, oh, yes, his parents are from Taiwan. This much-anticipated, affecting story about growing up different is more than just the story of a Chinese-American childhood; it's a fable for every kid born into a body and a life they wished they could escape. The fable is filtered through some very specific cultural icons: the much-beloved Monkey King, a figure familiar to Chinese kids the world over, and a buck-toothed amalgamation of racist stereotypes named Chin-Kee. Jin's hopes and humiliations might be mirrored in Chin-Kee's destructive glee or the Monkey King's struggle to come to terms with himself, but each character's expressions and actions are always perfectly familiar. True to its origin as a Web comic, this story's clear, concise lines and expert coloring are deceptively simple yet expressive. Even when Yang slips in an occasional Chinese ideogram or myth, the sentiments he's depicting need no translation. Yang accomplishes the remarkable feat of practicing what he preaches with this book: accept who you are and you'll already have reached out to others. (Sept.)

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 7 Up–Graphic novels that focus on nonwhite characters are exceedingly rare in American comics. Enter American Born Chinese, a well-crafted work that aptly explores issues of self-image, cultural identity, transformation, and self-acceptance. In a series of three linked tales, the central characters are introduced: Jin Wang, a teen who meets with ridicule and social isolation when his family moves from San Franciscos Chinatown to an exclusively white suburb; Danny, a popular blond, blue-eyed high school jock whose social status is jeopardized when his goofy, embarrassing Chinese cousin, Chin-Kee, enrolls at his high school; and the Monkey King who, unsatisfied with his current sovereign, desperately longs to be elevated to the status of a god. Their stories converge into a satisfying coming-of-age novel that aptly blends traditional Chinese fables and legends with bathroom humor, action figures, and playground politics. Yangs crisp line drawings, linear panel arrangement, and muted colors provide a strong visual complement to the textual narrative. Like Toni Morrisons The Bluest Eye and Laurence Yeps Dragonwings, this novel explores the impact of the American dream on those outside the dominant culture in a finely wrought story that is an effective combination of humor and drama.–Philip Charles Crawford, Essex High School, Essex Junction, VT

Excellent Example of the Graphic Novel Medium
By zagain
I happened across this book because it was recommended as an example of a good graphic novel in a MOOC from Coursera that focused on the graphic novel medium. The premise seemed interesting and I liked the idea of reading something that was outside of the realm of costumed super characters.

Although outside of the superhero genre, American Born Chinese isn't lacking in outlandish characters. The novel opens with the tale of China's Monkey King, an actual literary character in Chinese culture from the classic Journey to the West novel. Yang adapts the beginnings of the Monkey King's origins in adept fashion that truly makes perfect use of the graphic novel format. He intermixes prose and art in a way that conveys the story without leaving anything out. The artwork is colorful and comedic, helping to pull the reader in.

The Monkey King's tale then leads way to the much more mundane tale of Jin Wang. Jin Wang's parents moved to the U.S. from China to attend university and remained there afterwards living in a section of San Francisco with a strong Chinese expatriate network. They relocate to a mostly white suburb requiring Jin Wang to switch to a mostly white school where he struggles to fit in.

While the first tale is of the fantastical and the second of the everyday world, the third is a hybrid of the two. It features Danny, a caucasian all-American boy who is also starting a new school. Unlike Jin Wang, Danny is fitting in nicely at his new school. He has a pretty girlfriend and has made the basketball team. The problem for Danny is that his cousin, Chin-Kee, has just showed up for his annual visit from China. Chin-Kee is a Chinese stereotype from the early 20th century, mispronouncing R's for L's, having a pigtail and exaggerated front teeth, and plotting to find a woman whose feet he can bind. He's a true outlandish character in a normal setting who ruins Danny's life -- in fact, it's because of Chin-Kee's yearly visits that Danny ends up changing schools so often.

These three tales seem completely distinct and self-contained as you read through the novel. And yet, near the end the author begins to find a way to weave them all together into a singular and cohesive story that's quite entertaining throughout.

Overall, the recommendation I originally mentioned -- that this is an excellent example of how the graphic novel medium can be used to portray true storytelling -- is spot on.

His point, and he does have one, is actually awesome.
By Gen Falel
Okay, so you're already an open-minded culturally exposed reader, you're no longer a teenager, and you don't really need anyone to explain to you that there is racism in the world and it's bad.

Through the first few dozen pages or so of this volume, then, you'll just be admiring the art but yawning a bit at the lack of subtlety.

It's a trap. The graphic novel earns its 4.5 stars easily as the artist and author pulls it all together and you realize it was on purpose all along. I was very pleased when I finished this, and instantly bought a copy for a friend.

American Born Chinese Review
By Victoria McArthur
I really enjoyed the book. Yang brought up some very important views on finding ones identity. It's a very well thought out and written book for all young adults. I feel that most in Middle School and High School have a hard time discovering who they are and are forced to make a decision between their own identity, or that of the society they're involved in. A lot of stereotypes were brought up surrounding Asian cultures, specifically China. I believe this is a good book to read in a classroom setting because it teaches students to be more accepting and it's done in a unique format that reluctant readers may enjoy. More importantly it shows it's okay to embrace one's culture. We all have a lot to be proud of in our ancestry and we should respect our ethnicity and others. I would highly recommend this book. There were a few sexual references so a more mature audience such as a High School student or even Middle School would probably be better than elementary. This book helped me look at people differently and the format made it a fun, fast read.

Amazon.com Review
For all her offended sniffs and humphs, Mary Poppins is likely the most exciting nanny England--and the world--has ever seen. Young Jane and Michael Banks have no idea what's in store for them when Mary Poppins blows in on the east wind one autumn evening. Soon, though, the children are having tea on the ceiling, flying around the world in a minute (visiting polar bears and hyacinth macaws on the way), and secretly watching as their unusual nanny pastes gold paper stars to the sky. Mary's stern and haughty exterior belies the delightful nonsense she harbors; her charges, as well as her literary fans, respect and adore her.

Grownups who have forgotten Mary Poppins's true charms will be tickled pink to rediscover this uniquely unsentimental fantasy. Younger readers will walk into Mary's world without batting an eye--of course the animals in the zoo exchange places with people on the night of the full moon. Certainly a falling star landing on a cow's horn will make her dance ceaselessly. Why wouldn't one be able to enter into a chalk picture? The only disappointing aspect of this classic is that it doesn't go on forever! (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

From School Library Journal
Gr 3–6—The tale that has captured the imaginations of generations of children and spawned a beloved and classic motion picture starring Julie Andrews as well as a dazzling Broadway musical, begins with the eponymous nanny blowing in to Number Seventeen to care for the Banks children just in the nick of time. From a tea party on the ceiling to riding on peppermint horses, rather unusual and surprising adventures await Jane and Michael whenever Mary Poppins pops in. This 80th anniversary edition includes the four original books, Mary Poppins (originally published 1934), Mary Poppins Comes Back (originally published 1935), Mary Poppins Opens the Door (original published 1943), and Mary Poppins in the Park (originally published 1952) grouped into one convenient volume. Beyond the handsome package—a rich brick red cover accented with black and gold spot-gloss decoration—the deeper gems of this edition are the extras. There's a foreword by Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked (HarperCollins, 1995) and Egg & Spoon (Candlewick, 2014), that relates the story of his nerve-wracking, but ultimately illuminating, meeting with the great P.L. Travers when she was in her nineties. Maguire accurately captures the difference between the silver screen versions and the original tales: "The books…show glimmers of a far more mysterious and even dangerous world. For thirty years before the nanny began to sing on the screen, she stalked the pages of these books with ferocity, vanity, and power." At the end there's a brief excerpt from a talk Travers gave at the Unversity of Connecticut in 1974 entitled "On Not Writing for Children." Librarians and students of children's literature would do well to think on Traver's reluctance to call herself a "children's book author," for, as she states, "every book is a message, and if children happen to receive and like it, they will appropriate it to themselves no matter what the author may say nor what label he gives himself." A must-have for diehard fans and, though a tad bulky for little hands, nevertheless an excellent addition to home, library, and school collections.

Review
"When Mary Poppins is about, her young charges can never tell where the real world merges into make-believe. Neither can the reader, and that is one of the hallmarks of good fantasy."--The New York Times

a classic - almost
By Kathy
Reading the books that I loved as a child was wonderful - until I realized that it had been edited to make it more socially acceptable. The chapter called "Bad Tuesday" involves a magical compass that transports the characters all over the world. The original work used the author's vision of what the people would be like, and had used some pretty offensive stereotypes of the time. But the altered version completely changed the story, not only using animals instead of people, but changing even the storyline. Would have liked to be able to see the original work also, or at least been warned that the newer version was altered to that extent.

Mary Poppins Pops In For Parties in the Park
By Lynn Bulmahn
When adults forget their childhood pals, daydreamers make foolish wishes and the wind blows unusually strong, it always leads to something quite out of the ordinary -- that is, whenever Mary Poppins is around.
In this, the final Mary Poppins book that P.L. Travers gave us before her death at age 90, we share the five Banks' childrens' adventures. Besides Jane and Michael, who were in the classic Disney movie, there are also toddler twins John and Barbara and infant Annabel.
A big departure from the Disney flick is Mary Poppins herself. Here, she is not the smiling, syrupy sweet nanny that young Julie Andrews portrayed; rather, the book's title character is strict, stern, often sarcastic and very taken with herself. Her strong personality makes her a unique storybook character and readers will find this Mary Poppins more of an enigma. Which, frankly, makes for better stories.
Everything in this book is G-rated but not preachy. Travers gives her young readers many fascinating, but never frightening, fantasy situations. Or are they real? Jane and Michael can never quite tell. The lines between what's real and what's not always blur around Mary Poppins.
This book is a series of unrelated chapters, self-contained stories, all dealing with the same main characters. Nothing is ever as it seems in the nursery of No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane -- or in the nearby park.
On a hot summer's day, Mary Poppins tells the children a tale of a hobo who was an angel in disguise, shedding his rags and growing wings as he flies away.
In another chapter, Michael, upset that he's caught a cold, finds that some days when everything seems to be going all right, it's actually going all wrong. He's taught a valuable lesson on a planet full of cats.
Later in the book, the children find messages on falling leaves. And witness a delightful, but not frightening, Halloween shadow dance in the park.
The nanny's magical cousin, Mr. Mo, is introduced. Jane finds the little toy figures she's created and destroyed do have lives of their own.
Around Mary Poppins, adults -- including favorites such as Admiral Boom, Miss Lark and her two dogs Andrew and Willoughby, the Bird Woman and Bert -- are caught off balance. Zookeepers, policemen and taxi drivers react to a flurry of frenzied events. Characters pop out of storybooks, out of Jane's mind, and off ceramic bookends. Lions and unicorns and even Indian chiefs prance through the park.
We are taken to worlds that exist between the blades of grass in the lawn, and up in the sky, to where felines and children disappear. There are traffic snarls, wedding breakfasts and birthday parties. And through it all, stalks Mary Poppins, with not a hair out of place. In very short order, characters get what they deserve, if not what they expect, and things are set right.
How does she do it? No one knows. Mary Poppins, you see, never, ever explains. But, she always entertains. Have some fun in the park with this magical nanny.

Magical.

The entire Mary Poppins book series by the wonderful P.L. Travers is fantastic. I'm so glad to see they have finally arrived in hardcover with the original covers. No, this is not the sugary Disney movie--but this, the original story, will take your breath away with its magic and wonder. Give it a try. I think if you take these stories for what they are you will appreciate the wit and the adventure.

From Publishers Weekly
From the Micronesian Yap islands' 12-foot stone "coins" to today's paper currencies backed only by fiat, Nobel-laureate economist Friedman ( Free to Choose ) here examines anomalies of world monetary history, including the effect of successive 19th-century gold ore discoveries and refining improvements on U.S. and British tender. He traces American currency's long, contentious gold-silver bimetalist saga, marked by the so-called Congressional coinage "crime of 1873" and ending with William Jennings Bryan's unsuccessful "Cross of Gold" presidential campaign in 1896. Friedman cites harsh lessons from postwar hyperinflation in many countries and declares that Roosevelt's 1933 silver-buying program may have skewed China's silver-based economy toward eventual communism. Uncontrolled money growth is the cause of inflation, the author stresses, and only monetary reform, despite undesirable side effects like unemployment, can cure it. Abstruse, theoretical and chiefly for the initiate, the book recycles parts of earlier works by Friedman, who himself suggests here that the general reader might wish to skip a particularly challenging chapter.

From Library Journal
In this latest work, Nobel Prize-winning economist Friedman examines the role of money backed by gold and silver and our current world of fiat backed by faith. After an initial restatement of the essence of his monetary views, Friedman examines the historical impact of bimetallism in the United States and elsewhere. He devotes the remainder of the book to the principles and problems of modern money unlinked to any commodity. Often iconoclastic yet always persuasive, whatever Friedman has to say about money should always be read. Highly recommended for college and university libraries.

From Kirkus Reviews
A lively, enlightening introduction to monetary history from the libertarian economist whose contributions to the quantity theory of money earned him a Nobel Prize in 1976. Starting from the premise that no society or individual is unaffected by monetary policy (which centers on control of a nation's money supply), Friedman (co-author, Tyranny of the Status Quo, 1984, etc.) offers a quick and simplified briefing on monetary theory that stresses, among other matters, one of his favorite themes--that ``inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon.'' His stage set, Friedman ranges widely over time and place in demonstrating that there invariably is more than meets the eye to monetary events. He recounts, for example, how an 1873 coinage law had unintended consequences for American politics and economics over the next couple of decades. The author moves on to link the 1887 invention in Scotland of a process to extract gold from low-grade South African ore to the frustration of William Jennings Bryan's presidential aspirations in 1896 and beyond, moving smoothly into an accessible discussion of bimetallism. Friedman also makes a plausible case for the proposition that FDR's silver-purchase program during the 1930's hastened the Communist takeover of mainland China after WW II. Covered as well (in a prescriptive anti-Keynesian context) are upward price spirals down through the ages, the collapse of the Bretton Woods accord, fiat money, specie, the European Monetary System, and efforts by Third World countries to peg their currencies to the US dollar. Informed and informative perspectives from monetarism's most articulate apostle. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Everyone you ever wanted to know about money but were afraid to ask
By David M. Rosenberg
Friedman is perhaps best know to the general public for his vigorous defense of free market economics and limited government political philosophy. Within the academic world, however, Friedman is known for his economic theory of monetarism. Here Friedman again assumes the role of popular educator, but now does so to explain the nature and importance of currency. Friedman challenges the way most people think of money, indeed destroys some things most would take for granted. Money is, first and foremost, a social construct, and the value and usefulness of money can be enhanced or eroded as people gain or lose trust in a currency. Most of the book is a straightforward explanation of the nature of currency and the history of money - particularly in the United States. But Friedman does deviate from this basic purpose for a single chapter as he delves into some of the nitty gritty details of monetary economics. It's a chapter that, by his own admission, can and perhaps should be skipped by those lacking a firm grasp of economics, though its inclusion is worthy for those with some background in economics who still retain illusions about the nature of money.

Read. This. Book.
By Ret Miles
Before you spout off about monetary policy, the Fed, central banks, fractional reserves, "banksters", or paper money, Read. This. Book. This book provides important historical insight, and gives a clearer idea of what money is. This book also clears up what inflation is, and what causes it, and how even gold-backed money can be inflationary. It even provides insight into the change from the old Democratic Party to the modern progressive Democratic Party, as well as the background on one of the most famous speeches in US history (for many years THE most famous speech). And it provides the story of how our shortsighted and then-protectionist monetary policy weakened the government in China and helped pave the way for the Communist takeover. A must read.

Very simple and clear explanation of monetary ideas
By Tanya Yordanova Penkovska
This book from Milton Friedman is the first one I read from him, although I've watched a lot of videos at youtube and other online channels with him. The monetary things are explained in his simple and clear style and while reading I get insights about things that were very messed up in my head before that. Highly recommend for general understanding of the problems of today's society like inflation, goverment regulations and policies and money. There are also some description of how the FED and the other central banks function, as well as general explanation of what money are. There are 2-3 chapters that are targeted at more experienced economists with some math formulas and statistics but in general the book is not scientific and is contributing to each mind that reads it.

El campo de battalla de la mente
By N. RENDON
El campo de batalla de la mente, is a wonderful book. Ocassionaly as christian people we can think that we are perfect and that all we have to do is to pray and persevere. The Bible says that our "struggle is not against flesh and blood...but against the power of the dark world and against spiritual forces", therefore our battles will be spirituals. When I read this book I could realized that our behavior is showing "who" is winning our inside battle and why we should give God the opportunity to struggle instead of us and through our lifes. I suggest that this book should be read more than once, really.

By Jose Gregorio Velasquez

This is my first Amazon review. I easily tire of books. I often stop reading books 3/4 into the story having guessed the ending or becoming bored by the plot. Even with a two year old taking up the majority of my pillow and bed, I managed to read this story to the end. Then I returned to Amazon hoping to find more titles by this author. I almost want give 4 stars because there's not more to read. Hope to read more of her work in the future.

Artificial Minds (MIT Press), by Stanley P. Franklin

Recent decades have produced a blossoming of research in artificial systems that exhibit important properties of mind. But what exactly is this dramatic new work and how does it change the way we think about the mind, or even about who or what has mind?Stan Franklin is the perfect tour guide through the contemporary interdisciplinary matrix of artificial intelligence, cognitive science, cognitive neuroscience, artificial neural networks, artificial life, and robotics that is producing a new paradigm of mind. Leisurely and informal, but always informed, his tour touches on all of the major facets of mechanisms of mind.Along the way, Franklin makes the case for a perspective that rejects a rigid distinction between mind and non-mind in favor of a continuum from less to more mind, and for the role of mind as a control structure with the essential task of choosing the next action. Selected stops include the best of the work in these different fields, with the key concepts and results explained in just enough detail to allow readers to decide for themselves why the work is significant.Major attractions include animal minds, Allan Newell's SOAR, the three Artificial Intelligence debates, John Holland's genetic algorithms, Wilson's Animat, Brooks' subsumption architecture, Jackson's pandemonium theory, Ornstein's multimind, Marvin Minsky's society of mind, Pattie Maes's behavior networks, Gerald Edelman's neural Darwinism, Drescher's schema mechanisms, Pentti Kanerva's sparse distributed memory, Douglas Hofstadter and Melanie Mitchell's Copycat, and Agre and Chapman's deictic representations.A Bradford Book

Amazon.com Review
An encyclopedic but nonetheless compellingly readable overview of the history of Artificial Intelligence. It doesn't require a computer background in artificial intelligence, but it doesn't insult your natural intelligence either. There may be better books on the subject, but I found this to be just the right mixture of history, theory, cognitive psychology, evolutionary epistemology, and computer science.

From Booklist
Franklin's tour of contemporary thought on human, animal, and artificial minds introduces creative theories, models, and prototypes of artificial intelligence. After citing the scoffers' arguments regarding the improbability of fashioning artificial minds, Franklin examines some systems that do, in fact, exhibit aspects of intelligence. Next is a debate on the potential usefulness of symbolic AI computer models of cognition versus the connectionism brain model of intelligence. Examples of both models are presented; for instance, SOAR, a symbolic AI program, is claimed to be an architecture for general intelligence. Franklin also explores the multiplicity views of mind, including the pandemonium model, behavior networks, subsumption architecture, and autonomous agents, and he introduces Animat, an artificial life model of simple animals. The final debate is an airing of the views of those workers who dispute the importance of internal representation. Franklin is an entertaining writer and is uncommonly adept at elucidating scientific concepts. Brenda Grazis

Review

A wonderful relaxed tour of the two most important research topics for the twenty-first century: 'What is a mind?' and 'Can we create one artificially?'

(H. John Caulfield, University Eminent Scholar, Department of Physics, Alabama A&M University)

A highly imaginative and original synthesis of work in the sciences of the artificial and the natural. The book combines the best of cognitive science research with artificial intelligence theorizing, building a bridge between areas usually a chasm apart. I enjoyed it, too!

(Robert Ornstein, psychobiologist and author)

A wonderful relaxed tour of the two most important research topics for the twenty-first century: 'What is a mind?' and 'Can we create one artificially?

(H. John Caulfield, University Eminent Scholar, Department of Physics, Alabama A&M University)

Stan Franklin's Artificial Minds is a veritable encyclopedia of recent human attempts to simulate artificially certain aspects of what brains do naturally. A down-to-earth, nuts-and-bolts exploration of what it means to be a `thinking being'.

(Nick Herbert, author of Quantum Reality and Elemental Mind)

Good book for the time of publication
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
This book brings some refreshing new ideas and perspectives to the field of artificial intelligence. Although qualitative in his approach, and written for a "general audience", the author offers many insights into a field whose view of intelligence has been interpreted solely in terms of human capabilities. The author offers several alternatives for defining and measuring machine intelligence, all of them interesting, but needing more integration into practical applications in order to test their efficacy. His ideas though serve as strong perturbations that lift the field out of the local equilibrium it frequently finds itself in. He does occasionally wade into the muddy waters of speculative philosophy in the guise of the "mind-body problem", but the time spent in doing this is more than made up for by his efforts to define and give advice on how to build an artificial mind.
The author is fully aware of the roller-coast ride of confidence and false optimism that the field of machine intelligence has taken in the last five decades. He describes the "brittleness" of AI systems that are usually confined to a specific domain, such as chess or natural language processing, but cannot be used with drastic modification in other domains. It is the opinion of this reviewer that such domain-specific systems are intelligent, but should be classified as a form of "low-level intelligence". Systems that can cross learn across domains have a higher level of intelligence. The author could easily incorporate such a classification since his view of the mind is that it is "continuous" rather than a "Boolean" notion. He wants the reader to consider the proposition that there are "degrees of mind" rather than a discrete, discontinuous jump from not having a mind to having one. Mind can be implemented in machines he says, how much depends on several factors, with the most question to answer is how it can be done, not that it can be done.
Readers who do not want to engage in philosophical speculation may be tempted to skip the reading of chapter 2, which discusses the "mind-body problem". However, there are many interesting discussions in this chapter, and in omitting its perusal such a reader would miss in particular the highly insightful overview of the ideas of Aaron Sloman on free will. Sloman has some interesting things to say about free will, and his ideas are pertinent in an engineering setting, as the reader will discover when reading the author's summarization. The notion of free will as a "Boolean" is dismissed by Sloman, and the author shows how Sloman's view of free will is directly applicable to the design of (intelligent) agents. The view of Sloman, who is a philosopher, is a good example of the trend of many philosophers to move into the field of artificial intelligence. There are many examples of this trend, and this century will no doubt see the rise of many more of what may be called "industrial philosophers."
One of the more refreshing ideas in the book is the author's view that human intelligence should not be viewed as the sole one in existence. Quoting the commandment from ethology that "thou shalt not anthropomorphize" in his discussion of "animal minds" the author then makes a good case for the existence of different types of intelligences. The most interesting consequence of his discussion is the difficulty of defining and measuring intelligence in any kind of organism, entity, or system. Before progress can be gauged in artificial intelligence, it is important that there be tools developed that measure the intelligence gains involved in this progress. So far, these tools have been conspicuously absent.
It is clear that the author has a strong background in dynamical systems, since throughout the book one can see ideas from this field appear again and again. For example, in his discussion on `symbolic AI', the author defines a `production system' as a discrete dynamical system that consists of three components: a database, the set of production rules, and the control structure which directs the production rules. Dynamical systems also appear in the `connectionist' paradigm in AI and thus their use may bring together two proposals for machine intelligence that have traditionally been at conflict with each other.
Along with what the author would call real examples of artificial minds, such as the SOAR project, he discusses other interesting proposals for their construction. One of these is the `pandemonium model of mind', which makes use of an `association engine' and `concept demons'. Such terminology may seem alien to the reader, but the author puts any objections as to its impracticality by pointing out the computational interpretation of this model and its actual implementation in Pascal code. Still another project for creating an artificial mind that he visits is the work of Jose Brustoloni on a formal theory of agents. The author describes his work as one of the first that attempts to give a classification of autonomous agents. Interestingly, Brustoloni believes that one type of agent, namely the problem-solving agent, should not be viewed as intelligent, due to its need for maintaining a world model and the subsequent issues of the frame problem and non-monotonic logics. Also interesting is Brustolini's views on a `hierarchy of behaviors', beginning with `instinctive behaviors', and ending with `theory making'. The author states that he knows of no artificial agent that has shown signs of theory making. As of the time of publication, this was an accurate statement, but since then the artificial intelligence community has seen the rise of intelligent machines that can engage in the construction of scientific theories. Based on inductive logic programming, these machines have indicated abilities that are competitive with human scientists.
The author ends the book with optimistic notes of encouragement for the reader. Considering the content of the book and the developments that have taken place since its publication, there is every reason to be very optimistic about the continued development of artificial minds.

Excellent Survey of Mechanisms for Minds
By Ray Harris (ray@acm.org)
As a former student of Dr. Franklin, I am probably somewhat biased. I feel, however, that I can still provide an objective overview of this well written book.
The goal of Dr. Franklin's book is to put forth his concept of a general mechanism of mind. As an early proponent of autonomous agents, his writing leans heavily in this direction. His new paradigm of mind, described in the final chapter, can be seen to view the mind as a multitude of disparate mechanisms operating on sensations to create information and re-creating prior information with the primary purpose of selecting the next action, within its limits, for an agent to take.
In building toward his new paradigm, Dr. Franklin makes stops on an admittedly biased tour to briefly explain other concepts for mechanisms of mind. Patti Maes, Marvin Minsky, Rodney Brooks, Douglas Hofstadter, and Robert Ornstein are just a few of the pioneers in this field whose works are touched on. The bibliography serves as a must-read list for anyone interested in expanding their horizons on this new frontier.
Along the way, Dr. Franklin also sheds light on three debates central to Artificial Intelligence. They are 1) Can machines truly have minds, 2) Which approach, symbolism or connectionism, will yield a workable mechanism of mind, and 3) What role should representations play in intelligence? While presenting both sides of each argument, it is fairly clear which camp Dr. Franklin is in.
While written for the lay reader, Dr. Franklin's highly accessible writing should provide much food for thought for those practicing in AI as well. I highly recommend this book.

Great sightseeing, but where do I go afterwards?
By Julian Togelius
As is explained by other reviewers, this book is well-written, humorous and thought-provoking. It introduces you (at least, if you're like me, not (yet?) an AI professional) to a vastness of fascinating ideas. So far, it's a great book. Therefore I would like to sum the disadvantages:
* In the last chapters, Franklin loses contact with the ground. Not that he gets too speculative, but that you feel that you haven't really gripped some foundational issues enough to understand, and discriminate between, the more advanced ideas in the latter part of the book. I suspect this is inevitable, that you need some hands-on experience prior to appreciate what's the fuzz about these ideas. This criticism goes only for the last chapters.
* The philosophy chapter is uninspired.
* When I had finished the book, i wanted some advice on how to go on exeperimenting with the ideas and techniques introduced in the book myself. There was none.
But, propably, there is no better book.
