Was this book even edited? I paid much more than the $19.XX this book is currently selling for and was quite disappointed.

There are a lot of good info-graphics and charts, however reading around the lack of editing has been difficult.
Is there a reason this wasn't edited? And if so, why does books by this author cost so much?

I bought this and a second title from this author as textbooks for a class and now refuse to purchase any other titles by this author, as I am leery that they may all be edited this way.

WordPress for Eduction

The book has lots of information on how to install and use WordPress but is very light on actual applications of WordPress in education. As there are many other resources on how to use WordPress, it would have been more useful if the author had focussed on examples of how to use WordPress in real education.

easy to apply to an academic context

The ostensible topic is how to apply WordPress to make a website used by a school or academic department in a university. But Scott writes generally enough that you might well choose to use this book to build most any non-commercial website that has interactions and contributions from its visitors. By non-commercial, I mean that there are no transactions. So no need to include shopping carts or to hook up to a payment provider. Which can be a great simplification to those of you who have had to code such features.

The text shows how to add topics or categories. Very easy under WordPress. You can accompany this with a short description. More importantly, a category can be within a hierarchy. This is the most important concept to grasp with using categories, and it is very simple. So a physics department might have a top level category spanning all physics. With subcategories for atomic, nuclear, particle, condensed matter and biophysics, for example. And each subcategory has finer separations, all ultimately mapping to research groups within the department. The analogy to your situation should be obvious.

Also, the book describes how to add third party WordPress plugins. There is a thriving WordPress community which you can easily search for on the Web. You are encouraged to do so to find plugins germane to your campus needs. Saves you having to recode or to pay someone to do this.

You can let students contribute content via blogs. This can help get a sense of community involvement by fostering an active feedback loop amongst them and the faculty.

An Excellent Book for Teachers of all Types

WordPress for Education by Adam Scott is one of those rare books that fits a niche I didn't even know existed. I had never thought about the complexities of using WordPress in an educational environment before hearing the title of this work. Once I began to think about it and to explore what it meant to use a tool like WordPress within an educational environment, or for that matter to use it within any reasonably interactive learning arena, the need became clear.

While the author does cover the perfunctory topics of installing WordPress, getting a theme set up, and establishing users, he does not dwell on those areas. Thankfully. There are far too many excellent books that cover these tasks in depth. Best not to waste the meat of the book on those things. While the topics of security, backup, and optimization are touched on so the first time WordPress user knows they exist, the suggestion is obviously that those are topics for further reading.

Very quickly Scott gets down to business with plugins that will aid in education - such as those for generating bibliographies or for exporting your entire site as an electronic book. Even more important are the chapters on using multi-user WordPress, BuddyPress, and Open Courseware to develop a fully integrated electronic classroom environment. This can be anything from as simple as posting assignments online to as complex as letting students develop their own smaller sub-sites, creating discussion groups for interactive learning, and submitting and grading the final results.

Scott has a very easy and likable writing style. He has obviously used the products he is talking about and knows their details. He presents that information in the same way you would hope a good professor would, in a friendly yet authoritative manner. In WordPress for Education he presents the information you need to know while not pretending to be the be-all-end-all source, which is impossible because WordPress is a constantly changing and evolving platform.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is contemplating setting up an online education environment be it in primary education, secondary, or beyond. This also applies to businesses. We must not forget that education continues long after leaving the school building. Many of the techniques and tools in Scott's work would be excellent for implementation in employee training, religious education, vocational training, or other areas. Even civic clubs like writer's groups or any organization that has a teaching or testing process could benefit from at least a light read of the book.

Also note that, as is the case with all Packt Publishing books, the WordPress for Education is available in both paper and multiple electronic formats, so it is quite convenient to have with you in whatever form you prefer.

Fantastic Job.! Finally, a blueprint for building your own business...

This is a fantastic book, written with relevant examples, and testimonies by other freelancers who have already accomplished varying degrees of success in the freelance WordPress Web Designer world. I have a pretty extensive business background thru formal education and through 15+ years of IT/management consulting for various sized companies. Coming from my background, there was nothing earth shattering revealed in the book, but I found the precise relevance of the examples to be an eye opener. I'm not ashamed to say that I took copious notes and plan to implement many of the concepts and techniques in my own business.

If I were to list one thing that I think might limit the wider acceptance of the book, I think it would be that much of the tone seemed to be written from a WordPress "Developer" (someone who writes code, and fully customizes WP, including developing plugins and themes) perspective. I bring this up only in an effort to come up with something that "could" have been done differently. In fact, there are a lot of us out here who are not plugin developers, but who are building web development or website support businesses and who do not, and may never learn to write code at that level.

That being said, I found the writing style to be exceptional, and the book hard to put down. The staff at iThemes (I am also a customer of their utilities and tools which I use to manage the WP websites I develop and manage) did an great job in taking the majority of the jargon out of the text so that the book reads like, well..., a primer on how to run a solid web development business, rather than a sales pitch for their products. I admire and respect that... Well done.

Not What I Was Looking For

I was looking for a guide to tell me how to price my work, etc.

This book is more of a pep talk on how to have the courage to take the leap into working for yourself.

The Moonlight Room

Personally, having read this script, I think that the play is heavy-handed and pandering. The whole thing feels like an after-school PSA about why it's important to talk to your kids.

The play takes place in "the present", but it is dated by the fact that one of the main characters questions whether he can smoke in the waiting room (which I'm pretty sure they haven't let you do in a hospital since the 1970's), and then refers to 2002 as "last year".

My favorite part was the part with the peanut butter.

Great Prayer Journal!

To start with, the prayer journal is a well made quality product that is made to be kept for a long time. The leather is supple and the embossed title and design are a great combination. The stitching is well done and I have no doubt it will last a long time. I have carried this in my bag every day to and from work and grad school and it shows no sign of wear. I have never journaled my prayers until now and it has made a difference in my prayer life.

Decent content.. but this author needs an editor!

It's not bad.. nothing you couldn't find online, I'm sure. But this gives you something official-looking and actual paper to sign, so that's cool. If grammatical errors, typos, misspellings, poorly constructed sentences, and such really bother you, then I wouldn't pick this one. It doesn't RUIN the book, but it's kind of ridiculous.

This is the worst book I have ever had the pleasure of reading. If you are in TPE Relationship and you are the slave then that is what you are. You have rights to be treated with Trust, Honesty, and with Sane Play. It must be consensual when you enter into this relationship. After that if you are the slave expect to be treated as a slave should and negotiating. Not worth the money or time to add to your Kindle.

Inadequate Study

This is well researched book that a contains lot of information on Tamil brahmans. It covers the history of the social transformation of the community over the last century and a half. The authors’ efforts are to be appreciated for compiling so much information for today’s students of social studies. However their analyses and conclusions often missed the target.

The social scientists and works cited in the book are mostly Western, either European or American. As such it may not appear to present a problem but they are outsiders to the tradition. Outsiders can only write about the visible markers on the ground but cannot gain the insight of underlying causes or comprehend the soul of an alien society. It is the understanding of the soul of the community that will help to understand how it will further transform in the future. One of the authors is indeed an insider but her approach to the study is Western, and I think that she missed the target of understanding the soul of the community.

Indian social divisions are more complex that can be explained by one word “caste” as done by the authors and most Western social scientists. The division is composed of jati, varna, gotra, kula and more. Very few explicitly recognize that varna is an abstract, fluid and controversial hierarchical concept while jati is a reality for everyone because he/she is classified into a jati which is recorded in birth certificates, school and college records and other documents. Unfortunately the authors stuck to one word “caste” and failed to enlighten the readers of the distinction.
There is a comment that M. N. Srinivas’ work was somehow tainted because of his own brahman background (p 24). Nobody’s mind, including that of a Western scholar, is a blank slate when beginning to study Indian society. Every child in the West is taught in schools that Hinduism and Indian society being backward, superstitious, irrational, polytheistic, etc. It is naive to expect that the Western scholar erases such accumulated biases when undertaking the study of Indian society. Further, such diminishing of Srinivas’s work because of his origins amounts to cultural imperialism as it denies the agency to Indians to define who they are.

Authors acknowledge that the colonial rule consolidated the “caste system” (p 31, 56) but failed to elaborate on it. The purpose of the census exercise by the colonial government was to classify and rank the population on a civilizational scale under the racial theories and the ideas of Social Darwinism prevalent in Europe in the nineteenth century. The exercise reinforced the idea of jati identity among the indigenous population and in the process gave renewed life to the varna hierarchical ranking and thereby divided the society. The division added to the sense of security to the colonial authority which had experienced the nightmare of the rebellion of 1857.

Living in segregated areas of town (agraharam) is not unique to Brahman community. Most villages and small towns in Tamilnadu had segregated housing by jati groups among the non-brahmans as well, the degree of segregation dependent on the economic status of the groups. How much of this segregation was under the approval and encouragement of the authority is unknown and it needs to be studied further. Unfortunately the authors overlooked this and thereby implied that the segregated living was a unique brahman practice.

“the colonial government’s bureaucratic and legal system, which in theory, though not in practice, were organized by new principles of rationality and equity” (p217). Rationality is in the judgment of the observer but the equity can be measured. The strength of the colonial government depended on the division of the society and not equity. Any sense of equity among the ruled was perceived as a threat. The exercise of census was to reinforce and codify the division in ranks and categories. The colonial government early on had categorized brahmans as the “brown English men”, an idea floated by Macaulay, and ranked them at the top of the varna ranking ladder and facilitated their English education earlier than the other jatis. It explains their large presence in the government bureaucracy in the nineteenth century. This did not happen by accident but by design of the colonial government. The authors missed this in their scholarship and the reader is left with an incomplete history.

The book documents the social transformation over time but missed to focus on many forces that drove the transformation.

Very interesting research on the early urbanisation of the tamil brahmins and how that has played out over the last 150 years, including their migration to other cities in India and outside. I would have preferred a tighter editing and a slimmer book but overall a good eye opening read.
